Default *HELP* Worrying noise 90 2.3NG

Hi all,
My car has developed a worrying noise, it only happens when the engine is warm, between 1000 and 2000rpm and only intermittently at that.
What is it, it has me worried and confused.

TIA

Dan.

I could be wrong but i am thinking it sounds like a tappet or tappets not getting enough oil pressure to make them work properly. I don't think it's piston slap that usually happens to start with on a cold engine. Was the engine cold when this happened? Tappets is my guess. Will be interesting to see what others think. When was the last time the oil and filter were changed and exactly what was used type of oil and what filter?

Ouch!! That doesn't sound too good....guessing but perhaps a broken valve spring? Not much use really as it's a blind guess, but sounds like you need to have the head off to find out whats going on.....

Oil and filter where changed on the 27'th of December2014.

My local VW stealership where I normally get 5-40 quantum platnum oil and filter from had none, so it got a carlube 10-40 semi synthetic and no idea what brand of filter.
As this was the only day I would have the use of my mechanic friends lift for the foreseeable future at the time.

I have been changing the oil every 2500 miles. So assumed they would be fine for the duration?

bad knocking strange it stops somtimes, could be hyd tappet or somthing in there that doesnt belong but sounds very knocky like bearings or little end does oil light flash or can u drive it with no noise ?is worse hot or cold ?pull the spark plugs do a quick compression test or look in to see if any damage on piston edges ? check oil level if low enough top it off and start before oil goes down if stops noise momentareily its cam follower related

Thanks for replies Guys!

Hi, no oil light, and oil pressure is normal, going by aux gauges at least anyway. The car seems to be driving fine.
It's worse when the engine is up to normal running temp. Oil level seems to be fine. Will have to go and get compression test done.

Is it definitely coming from the engine itself and not an ancilliary item in the engine bay that's loose, a cover or heatshield or something? I only mention that as to me it sounds to me like something that's vibrating and when it hits a certain resonance/frequency it makes the noise.

Course this would be the 'best case' scenario!

It sound like an ignition knock to me, if it was pistons hitting valves due to lazy tappets then it wouldn't happen too much before it all failed. Any fuel changes petrol station changes recently?

The reason for that is oil gets thinner the hotter it gets so less pressure to keep stuff apart ie your hydraulic tappets or worse little ends.
