Only thing i'd like to know is who would want to fit a re-welded cast manifold? especially on one of these because of the hassle to get to change it in the first place?

Just about everyone at present. I've done about ten in a row.

Welding - done properly - is a perfectly acceptable way to repair a cracked exhaust manifold. There are hundreds of thousands of vehicles on the road - everything from the bangers on the Brighton run to today - for which there is no other option. Experts who do nothing else exist and give warranties. It's just like repairing a puncture - sometimes you can do it, sometimes the damage is too severe.

Contrary to some people's belief, Audi turbo manifolds are NOT especially prone to cracking and will last the life of the vehicle if properly cared for. That includes maintaining the right engine mounting in such a way that the downpipe and engine do not ever come into contact with the subframe. A collapsed engine mount will - inevitably - cause a manifold crack sooner or later - it's only a question of time.

An experienced eye can judge the condition of the engine mount from the position of the idle adjustment screw relative to the chassis, or the shape of the downward protruding sump seen from the front, or from getting underneath and checking the separation between the rear of the sump and the subframe. It takes seconds.

It's your car. An engine mount and spacer costs £50 or less - a manifold repair somewhat more.

A manifold welded by a specialist in such repairs will last indefinitely PROVIDED the engine mount, spacer, and engine mount heatshield are replaced and maintained.

Your not really saying anything remotely new or ground breaking , there are two camps, those that say the manifold fails because it is the actual manifold while the other camp points a finger at the engine mount and spacer and down pipe clamp/ bracket.....old news

Agreed - I've been saying it for some years.

If you wouldn't mind moving the cracked manifolds that belong to me over to your office, I'll arrange for Mark to collect them in the New Year.
