You didn't miss anything, i've not said anything here. I've never bought a car that needed so much doing to it because of tight arsed owners despite it's full history !! And now this, think it's been there since we bought it, i noticed a slight noise when i bought it but put it down to just wear in the top end and needing an oil change. It's consumed 4 1/2 litres of top quality oil in 12k miles! I wonder what john thinks as he heard it running? But yes, ...........i'm gutted.

Got to be worth sorting when you can Mark, not sure how much it would cost though. In all honesty if John thought something was wrong i think he would have said so, he doesn't strike me as the kind of man who would let you buy a car with a problem.

Too late Bruce as i already bought it and went straight round his place straight after. The seller was only a few miles away from Johns place. Perhaps John didn't didn't want to say? Who knows.either way we're gutted.

It's worth sorting for sure but how much more grief do i need?

It's a difficult one Mark. I hope you can get it sorted. I know how gutting it feels.

My A3 (which I think is a very good car, suits our needs perfectly) uses quite a bit of oil too, about 2 ½ litres in 10k. The question in my case is whether to just live with it as there is no apparent major issue, no smoke under load or startup, or over-run, no leaks and only an occasional trace seen in the mirror at random times.

Sorry about the engine, especially after all the work you've done to get the car sorted, but have you considered getting another 2nd hand engine as the 1.4 petrol is fitted in all sorts of VAG cars and they are relatively cheap, just the pain of swapping over, probably cheaper than fixing yours in the long run.

My A4 smokes after being on overun just going to live with it for now !
