Exhaust options on TYP-85 CQ?
so, what are the options for exhausts on a typ-85 CQ?
Some of you (mainly with rally reps) seem to have gone for UR turbo exhausts? is that right? if so, are they a direct fit? (with exception of coarse of the rear bumper) And if they are of the less restrictive turbo type, have you lost any torque at all? Or have you gained power top end? (i know they certainly sound cool) Would such an exhaust be useful for extra power on an engine with a larger displacement such as mine? with its bigger valve's & gas flowed head. ? allowing it to breathe easier maybe? Oh,.. and what manufactures do you use/recommend? Cheers. Gaz. |

As you say, they are Ur systems and the tailpipes will need modifying to fit under a CQ rear bumper.
The only other modification is after the downpipe union/joint. The Ur downpipe is slightly longer, so the system falls about 2" short on a CQ. This is fixed by cutting a section (including the bolted joint) off the old system flange and welding it to the Ur one. (Basically extending the end of the Ur system by 2"). system wise, the old white CQ ran a 2.5inch standard twin box Ur system, the Rally Rep runs a full 3" single box scoprion. Torque wise, not really noticed any difference in torque, but the high end breathing is much improved. (and I mean much!) Noise wise, there's bit of an issue though (well I felt it was), the 2.5" twin box system wasn't as loud, (obviously) but had a 'rasp' around 3Krpm that I hated. (others said it sounded great, but it didn't rock my boat). This 3" Single Box Scorpion system is a totally different ball game, Very Loud, and no rasping. Pops and bangs well too. Well worth having IMHO, and will be awesome with the modified engine... But you could fall into the 'raspy' noise, so go careful (read 'Balls Out - 3"), Booties avoided the rasp, and so's our Rally Rep. Our first 2.5" system was Audi, the second is Scorpion. Booties is a 'bitza-everything' GMBH. You might be as well to also put Jubilee clips around the exhaust donuts to give them rigidity and final adjustment of positioning. Hope this helps VBR Ian

Yes you can but as Ian states the Ur system exits nearer the middle of the car not towards the near side like the Cq. It fits Ians nicely as his Cq has Ur bumpers. Mine is a 2.5" rear stainless box which exits through a 3" single slash cut stainless pipe. It was made by the London Stainless Steel Exhaust Company and cost me the best part of 400 quid.....just for a rear box. The section from the down pipe to the rear box is a 2.5" straight through mild steel pipe. The noise is devine with no rasping at all, just a nice deep ( quite loud ) burble which changes to a howl as the revs rise. I'll show you one day.

try JP exhaust in macclesfield, ask for dave and say james with the audi quattro sent you.... I'm looking to get a straight through section to begin with then get custom backbox made up after IoM in april.
2.5" should be all you need for a daily car, 3" would be unbearable on a 5pot N/A....
