Best case(read cheepest!) scenario is that it's the battery. If the battery is really goosed, don't expect to throw a cheep set of jump leads at it and expect it to fire up instantly?
If you have a drain on the battery (ie fault with vehicle electrics) this would need checking with a meter.
Charging fault would mean it might charge sufficiently to run the car but not to start it......best case here would be earth strap, and this would also cause poor starting/cranking.
If you attached jump leads to battery and it didn't want to turn over and then you removed the NEGATIVE jump lead from the battery negative and attached it to the metalwork of the engine.......and it started, then doing it this way would be bypassing the engine earth strap and suggest there may be a problem here?

You say you're going to replace the battery, get it tested first as the money you'll save not buying one might need to go towards an alternator!!(worst case scenario)

Hopefully just a goosed battery though.

Let us know.

Maybe alarm/immobiliser out of sync.
I'll bet there's a thread somewhere on this....
Maybe try putting the driver's window down, then lock the car and reach in, put key in ign and see if it'll start then.
My car doesn't have factory immobiliser so not overly familiar with B4 setup.
