I thought a fire damaged car would have gone to a cat A or B write off status and became parts only salvage.

The wings were perfect until the recovery of the car - they got crushed by the straps used to lift her onto the recovery truck.

The insurance company would not let me have the car back for less than £10K - not even open to negotiation- would be interesting to see what he paid...….


The FB only used water.....but a hell of a lot of it - they spent 15 mins cooling down the O/S strut mounting - and kept looking at it through a thermal viewer until they got the temp down to 75 degrees.

I would have loved nothing more than to put her back on the road......she was part of the family for 25 years.....but it was just insurmountable - for me anyway....

Bless, Mark, as much as it pains me to say it, I think you made the right decision. The damage is clearly extensive and intrusive through body metalwork and wiring loom, let alone engine, transmission and interior. After all that, you’d still have a car you’d know had been badly damaged and that’d play on your mind every time you drove it or received a compliment on it. Crushing for you, but you did the best thing.

Thanks Ian - It was a painful decision......and a decision not taken lightly...

however......bearing in mind I surrendered the V5 to the insurance company 3 months ago I have just received the V11 to re tax her!!!!

it doesn't rain but it pours.....

my beloved A4 workhorse has just suffered a cam belt failure at 80MPH on the M1...…

was looking at getting an engine rebuild - but there are some horror stories out there and some absolute scam artists..

I'm going to go and buy a pair of roller skates...

I think its a no brainer.....

Quoted £1600 for a complete recon....but this is probably a scam - and once they get the car and strip it the cost will no doubt triple.....

Bearing in mind the A4 has done 255K miles and has not let me down once before...….even with so called good 68K engine for £600 - i'd have to get it fitted....and then the auto gearbox has also done 255K so how long before that goes belly up?

I think I will retire her !

If you can be bothered, strip stuff that is easily removable and people are likely to break (lights, mirrors etc.) and flog it on eBay, that’ll claw back a £100 quid or so then get the local car disposal mob to pick it up. Sad, but it’ll just take up space and cost you shed loads of money from now on in.

It’s been a hard year so far Mark, I hope things pick up for you soon bud.

I suspect an outlay of 6k is recoverable for parts, but a rebuild would not be economic..

Every £1 spent now is a £1 wasted....
