Battery charged, digi dash lights up in all its glory and the reading is 2nd or 3rd green led in the gauge - i.e. where it usually is when I've started it before

So, can I just clarify what you have?

Good battery voltage.
Dash lights up.
But no starter motor.

Do the ignition lights come on (oil pressure and charge fail)?
Can you here the relays energise in the fuse box when the key is turned to the 3rd position?
Is there any click from the starter?

If you don't have ignition lights or relays clicking, it's most likely the immobiliser.
If you have ignition, then it might be the starter wiring. Maybe the 2 control wires to the starter not on or the wrong way round. Or the single colour coded connectors at the front of the offside chassis leg above the intercooler.

If you are still stuck, I could pop over and have a look, but probably not until next weekend (got the brother in laws oven to sort out today ).

Thanks for the offer Tim I may well take you up on that offer if I can't sort by mid week, as Mark (real MSH) can testify I have an excellent selection of tea & jaffa cakes!

Ignition lights come on, there are a couple of relay clicks from the engine bay but when the key is turned fully all lights go out, return to 3rd position and all come back on.

I'll take a look around the starter and double check all is attached, fairly sure I didn't notice anything out of place as I didn't want to have to go back into that space once the inlet manifold was on!

I'll check once little one goes for a nap!

Thanks all

Dave

Sounds like everything is as it should be then, just the starter solenoid not getting its signal.

There is an outside chance that the immobiliser interupts the starter signal, but its not really the done thing because the car can still be bump started, hence usually disabling the igntion.

Once you find the different coloured single connectors at the front of the o/s chassis leg, I think the white one is the starter solenoid (its a red/brown cable anyway). If you split the connector, there should be 12V on the plug from the main wiring loom when the key is turned to the start position.

hmm, a good and easy one to try. Given that the clamps I have for the battery aren't too great it wouldn't surprise me.

Many thanks to Gary for signing up to CA to let me know that he and his pearl white WR reside not 300yds from my house!

Was good to meet you tonight Gary and thanks for showing me your car, lovely clean looking example.

Got a few other things to check after looking at Gary's. Namely:

The distributor seems to be fitted with the plug facing to the front of the engine bay rather than Gary's which faces to the back - what, if any, effect will this have?

I will check the starter wiring in the next day or so once I source a new lamp so I can see what I'm doing!

Tim - you may get a call in a day or two if those don't help :P

does not matter where dizzy is as long as the the rotor arm lines up with the mark on the body with the engine at tdc.
