You can buy them direct from Gmax: www.gmaxsuspenion.co.uk
Front damper Part no:50 AU 04F The price for the coilover bits came from the demon tweeks catalogue and Audi Derek added links to others further back up the thread ![]() |

http://www.gmaxsuspension.co.uk/audi..._4980_4992.htm Do I need the 50au 03f or 04f? Mine is a 1.6 so that worries me, is the 2.2/2.3 suspension setup the same as mine???

PASS
, the statement is the same on both apart from the part code![]() I would send them an email, I sent them an email enquiry and they got back to me within a couple of hours and were pretty helpful. That said I had asked if there was any differance between the Suspension kits and the seperate dampers as they were offering differant kit codes, for differant ride heights. Their response came back saying the dampers were the same for my model car. So the chances of your codes and corresponding dampers being differant are pretty slim. |

Sorry guys, but only just spotted this thread.
I am running coilovers on my 90. I'm afraid I have no idea about the technical specs, but they were fitted by Tim Cooper when he was still at QRS. I do believe the extension tubes wre sourced from CompBrake and the inserts used were Bilstein B6's. Initially I ran with solid mounts, but for a mainly road going car, these were much too harsh so I have reverted to using normal rubber greens. THis has improved the ride quality no end. Anyone who woulod like to examing the set-up is welcome to come and have a look to see what might be needed (can't go anywhere as car is non-runner at the moment). Alternativelky, give Tim a shout and I am sure he will pass on the relevant information. HTH Cheers Chris

I'm sure they are shorter and using 2 1/2" springs. With the solid mounts, the ride was actually so harsh I think it induced more understeer but once I went back to using the rubber topmounts, this eased up considerably and the ride quality was surprisingly good. I cannot recollect a single instance of bottoming out either. I'm not sure what additional difference this made, but I also fitted cast front wishbones with S2 ball joints and rose jointed trackrod ends. Peter Reeves said the wishbones and balljoints made a massive difference to the handling of his ur. On mine, all the above changes were made at the same time and certainly on track the track it made quite a difference to the handling with cornering being much flatter. I'm afraid I don't know actual dimensins, but maybe these pics will help? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Any actual inspection is still welcome. HTH Chris

Yep defo helps, look at the stock one at the top, compare it to the bottom 'new' one, the tube length looks to be the same, and not shortened. Which means if you had no bottoming out, that the tubes themselves need no shortening, and all we need are the right dampers (and bry needs the weld on bits)
The Blistein B6 SPORTS on their product catalogue are 153EURO ex VAT! Would be nice but thats pricey when you get them delivered etc... I found this info HERE from the parts catalogue. Hope that helps folks, I'll probably go with the Gmax... can't afford £300 on front dampers when I want to spend 1k on paint and £100 on wheels refurb!! lol

That is indeed interesting, but if we cut the tubes shorter, to gain travel I can see other things happening...
A. Too much removed and the wheel will end up hittin the arch rather than bottoming out. B. A bad job would result in a serious failure C. We then need to look again at shock inserts to find some ones that will be very specific and shorter tube length than stock, therefore the ones we've found above probably won't fit. ![]() I'm now unsure whether to buy the cheap shocks and be done with it, or research more about cutting the tubes. The only reason I'd want to cut the tubes is simply the bump steer removal part, as mine can get a bit annoying on that front. Grrrrr

Well I finally got to work today and took my strut in with the damper in it that was given to me when I got the car...
How to do this easily? Well, get a massive hammer, and a bench vice, a few 'taps' and it was off, easy as pie. ![]() And to my suprise, it wasnt an oil damper after all, not as in stock, but a damper insert! ![]() ![]() So therefore it's a shame one is missing one as these could probably just go on, tho I do not know how much shorter these dampers are, so I need to buy better shorter ones anyways. ![]() So anyway, the damper insert that fits the tubes fine is 362mm long in its body. Hope that helps. I'm going to buy the Gmax dampers at the end of the month, before then I'm gonna get these cleaned up and painted. Tempted to put new bearings in while I am at it... ![]()
