Didn't get a piccie.

But a guy local to me took his low-milage ur-quattro 20V to a local mechanic for a service and then called me in because the car was smoking and he feared the turbo had gone.

Nah. 30mm too much oil showing on the dipstick. Fixed that and a couple of other issues.

He called me a little later - engine making a banging noise. Yup - it would wake the dead but not a noise I'd ever heard before. No choice - head off. Not trivial on his RR - lots of spurious problems like badly fitted oil cooler lines blocking the lower turbo oil and water connections, etc.

#5 piston didn't reach the top of the bore at TDC. Diagnosis - bent rod. Pulled the engine apart and all rods are bent.

Did new valve stem oil seals (so head stripped to component level), fitted and Plastigaged new connecting rods and shells. Rebuilt the engine.

At about 16:00 yesterday - at the first attempt - it literally purred into life again.

The customer approached from about 50 yards away.

"When are you going to start it?"

"Listen carefully."

(Bought a new toy, too - Bahco 2053-BR. It's a 3" or so 1/4" bit reversible ratchet that's IDEAL for getting to the Jubilee clips that Audi put on before they raised the engine into the engine bay - the ones that point in exactly the wrong direction to get any other tool on. Lower intercooler to throttle body, for instance.)
