As I said, I got a 2.2. turbo here in Wiltshire.

It'd cost you £150 to get it back (trailer = £50 a day, van = £50 a day plus diesel.)

I want to get out to where it is stored and have a play to get it running again and get some bits off it (lights, towbar, random bits of trim), but the engine and loom etc will still be in place.

Just bung it in!!!

It's going nowhere fast, but I would like it gone by end of April at the latest (storage charges etc)

Might be close with the throw of the crank but nothing that cannot be fixed. With that combo you can get 220bhp with a schrick cam and almost 200lb/ft torque. Head flows brilliantly as standard so not worth polishing and porting for the sake of 10bhp (unless you're after every last HP). Was going to do this myself until I was talked round to the 20Vt....
my 2.5L engine's bore and stroke are: 82.0 x 94.5 mm

In that case stick with what you have and use the schrick 272 in it and see the mid range performance increase. The 94.5mm crank is unusual as the diesel is 95.4mm! These longer throw cranks do not love high revs as much as the 86 or even 92 cranks but still worth fitting the schrick cam.

Its not really so much the cranks not liking the rpm changes, its the pistons that suffer from excessive speeds generated by the greater throw thats the engine killer.

3500feet per minute average piston speed is pretty usual these days.
Ever wondered how an F1 engine goes to 18000rpm? It has a 1 inch stroke!

Theres an old saying regarding engine speeds: Wear and tear lies up there.

its not a diesel crank in the GTi engineering lump.. its a custom built crank, made from chrome molybdenum. Pistons are forged & are also a custom size. and the con rods are forged also. AFAIK

i think the schrick 272 will be on the cards as soon as i get the engine transplanted from my old CQ to this one .

how much improvement does the schrick cam give?
an engine builder in brum advertising cams said he could do me a copy for £95 but i had to supply a cam from a 2144 ( ke?) engine first

I'd spend the £350 on a new schrick cam...... regrinds wont offer the same as a schrick cam.
Cam change will push power up but also up the rev range, expect it to be abit gutless low down but by 2k it'll start to pick up and then above 3k your into the powerband and as ian stated it really does pick up then.
