New Radiator

When water pump of my mother's mk3 golf was going to fail, there was some weak squeaking @ iddle, but there was also slight loss of coolant, noticable by level in bottle and nothing more. But there wasn't any problems with engine cooling or cabin heating, altough she at that time almost didn't drive in city. Let's say, there was seals of pump's axle gone, but it didn't affected pump's performance.

The pump will sound like a a bag of bolts, or to be more precise like tappets. Also when the car gets to running temp and you hear a strange 'gurgling' noise then you def have an airlock. The thermostat that brings the electric fan into play is on the bottom of the rad, but I think you said the electric fan os working. For what they cost to I'd still replace it.
