Thanks for all the advice guys and gals, I finally solved it!

ISV was faulty. It should have been SHUT when no power to it, but as you can see:

Both the original (top) and BRAND NEW CHEAP COPY off ebay (bottom) have daylight showing. The bottom one even is misaligned! Guess I'll be sending that back and getting my £40 back then!

How I solved it: (not elegant and could be made prettier if I had some "street" elbows and a 22mm valve)

It now idles at approx 1200 rpm which is still too high, but I think that is caused by the large butterfly sticking open slightly.

Cheers,

Steve

I spoke too soon.

Just been out for a test drive, and it is idling at 1400-1500 but it is drivable, as normal, just idles high.

That is with the valve completely closed, which should stall it.

I will recheck my handiwork tomorrow.

I accidentally found this topic and forum by using google. I can say only one thing - pimpdriver is noob. I would like to say he's an idiot, but he do stupid things because he didn't know how things must be...

Ok, my story. I have 1986. A80 B3, there was 1.8 SF carburated engine, i changed it by myself to 2.0E 3A. I get almost all needed stuff in junkyard from one car - engine, wiring harness with ECU, air filter box with injection "head", igniton distributor, fuel pump with hoses and so on. Only i did some mistakes, one of them - because i didn't exactly know what iddle speed solenoid i need, i bought the one wich isn't suitable for my ECU - from SD 1.9E with 3 contacts, 034133455 without "B" letter. I wired it, it worked, but it's response is different from 034133455B, and engine was prone to stall when i used clutch [in city]. This topic i found searching "034133455B". So, today i get to junkyard to find the real one [this iddle speed solenoid also can be found on 2.0E 8v 3A, 2.0E DOHC 9A, NG, 2.8 and 2.9 VR6...], when i said that it can be found on NG, the man there walked to one C3, i take a look [i prefer 4 cilynder engines], found, it was the one i needed it. It was covered with dirt and oil, i checked it with mouth - it doesn't closes. Because i had read this topic i thinked it's damaged, but there was no other, and i saw that it's moving, so it's working. Later i fit it in my car - now i have almost perfect iddle Some ppl would like to say this solenoid is damaged, but i have perfect iddle, so is it?
I can give only one advice - pimpdriver just take off ALL vacuum hoses, disconect them all and check EVERY SIGLE PART! Don't do stupid things.... When this solenoid becomes dirty and unusable, it causes iddle @ ~3k rpm no matter, is there connected it's wire or not, and this high iddle is stable.

BTW sorry for my english.

well thanks for the kind words!

If the ISV is dirty and unusable it causes a rough idle around 5-700rpm.

I am going to check all the hoses next, there aren't many. It is either the one to the ISV from the black inlet boot, or the one from the ISV to the inlet manifold. I will also fit some jubilee clips, as there weren't any on there.

Only some? I was suprised, on this NG in junkyard wasn't too, i have one on every single connection. Btw for 1,5 years, there was just one time i didn't get to point "B" [except two times when i was out of fuel] - soon after i get my 3A working, i get to one friend's home 5 km's from my home, and when i started driving home, engine just stalled and i was unable to start it - they towed me home, there i find out that hose from ISV disconnected by itself...
Unfortunately, i don't have any enough good soap camera, otherwise i will take some photos of my engine - but i'll do that tomorrow.

I rekon this is and ECU or an electrical problem. I'm sure by now you've been over all the hoses with a fine tooth comb. If the car has an ECU i'd be checking all connections here. Anyone got a spare you could have/borrow?

Well, finally sorted it (nearly!!!!).

Took the ISV off my "spare" car, and fitted it.

It now idles at 1100rpm, which is better than 2500rpm.

The "new" ISV I bought off ebay was a £35 piece of rubbish. Genuine Bosch ones are £110.

I am going to drive it this week and see how it is.
