You will need to disconnect the wires from the back of the fader and get them to the stereo which may mean you may have to extend the original wiring.

Sounds like you will have to pull in new wires as they have a common earth between front and back or you could as chris keep the fader and just wire the connection to the front speaker connections of the new stereo only

i've sourced an old Blaupunkt boston, would anyone know if these would have been fitted in a Coupe GT(1985)?

Chris...I replaced the one in mine (when my dad owned it) with a, then modern unit. I have put back in an original (not the original from the Coupe as my Dad slung it) Cambridge unit. I got that off one of the forum members for £20.
Sometimes wonder about fitting a cd player in, and then think no. Got someold tapes and the 5 pot beat to keep me happy

20vcqdriver, did actually help me fit a cd player ,in place of the old original, but like you
i'm always undecided whether to keep original, hence the reason for getting this while i had the chance,
could always run one of those tape to iphone wires to play any songs you
want?
agreed though , i just end up listening to the burble
