going by our buddies over in motorgeek land you CANNOT bolt a 4 cyl to the 016 box properly, although they do say theres a european version with the 4 bolt pattern(poss mean rare in the usa?). a 4 cyl needs a 01a or 01e they say

There is a few 5 pot-1.8t swaps on motorgeek, as far as I can remember 01a boxes will bolt up to 4/5 cylinders, 01e boxes will also bolt up to both, ie b3/b4 series 3 coupes. 016 boxes are either 4 or 5 cylinder specific.

Think sam has proved that you can swap engines around on the 01a!

May need to check on compatibilty of gear ratios with existing rear diff but that's not too dificult to check.
Should make a nice car, the 1.8T is a very tunebale engine and very light.
I ADORE the 5-pots but the 1.8T would make a very good sensible choice for a rapid 80! SHorter, lighter and more powerful.... Keep us updated!
I wouldn't want to give up 'my' 5 pot heaven, but I still would love to see a type-85 Coupe quattro with a 1.8T and 300bhp.

I'd love to see how it goes, & handles.

Sam, that is awesome (if the photo quality is a bit poop). Finally got the MOT on mine so I will be driving it about while I gather up the rest of what I need for the conversion.

Is there a definative answer on this? Some say yes some say no!

Thinking of 5 cylinder type 89 coupe quattro. And then fitting a 4 cylinder 20 vavle turbo in it
