holy moly... lots of you havin heat problems then... ah the thermostat was replaced to see if that would cure the problem .. temp hand sits about half way on the gauge.... its not the control knob as it heats up slightly if left sitting... as i siad there isnt much flow actually coming from the engine and thats why im thinking the waterways are blocked some how.... he was told the head gasket could be to blame but im not sure about that...

I changed the rad on my 92 2.0 audi 80 last week, had the same trouble lol
What you have to do is.... Remove the exp tank filler cap and get a bottle of water ready. Then as you're looking at the engine, pull off the left hand pipe that goes to the heater matrix, (slacken the clip first lol) then push it upto the plastic part you just removed it from but leave a tiny gap right at the top
Then top up with your water untill it starts coming out of said gap. Then push the pipe all the way on and tighten the clip back up. Worked on mine

how could you tell if you have a knackered water pump?

I removed the brass bolt when the engine was up to temp and got bubbles coming out, i had to top up the expansion tank by about half an inch, no difference to heating.... in fact my breath warms the car quicker!!

the fan eventually kicks in so assume the thermostat is fine?

also being -13* here I dont suppose this helps either!!

you can only tell by taking it off, you would prob. get overheating / running hot in the summer, are both the pipes to the heater hot when the fan cuts in ? the should both be as hot as the top hose ie can't touch them for long if they are the problem may be a blocked matrix (the water is only going through part of it ) or the control flap that alters the heat setting may not be working

I fixed the damn thing myself! I spent 4 hours ******* around with the car on Saturday. I devised a technique for flushing the core where I attached hoses to each side and then attached a 2-liter soda bottle filled 2/3rds full with boiling water and then proceeded to force air and water thru the core back and forth by squeezing the plastic bottles. I gat a whole bunch of shit out of there!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think this mad method was on a U.S site..

had a quick look at the car yesterday... took both pipes off at the bulkhead where they go to the matrix.... no water flowing from either... the head must have a blockage... the car isnt overheating and the fan cuts in as it should... ....
new head time maybe...
