I admire greatly Stig, Michelle, Hannu and Walter. But one man, above all, ticks my boxes and that's old Dai. I so admire his talent behind the wheel, he was 'The Brit' that was never a German Works driver, a runner up, always overshadowed by the fantastic four. But he could drive, Jesus could he drive. And it never really seemed to matter what in. I don't think he ever drove anything at less than ten tenths. I would say that mechanically speaking he was not the most sympathetic to the cars longevity, I have footage of the 85 Manx when he drove one of Suttons A2's. The footage was off the start line up near Sartfield Farm and the way he went off the line was just aural Nirvana.
Having built the car I've built ( and still not finished ) it was beyond belief when Dave Preece walked 3/4 mile to fetch Llewellyn and 3/4 mile back, at Chatsworth last year, and it was a secret kept from me, so he could sign the bonnet of my car. I had Mr Short sign it earlier in the day and just thought to myself, 'one day, if I'm lucky, I'll get Llewellyn to sign it too'. Then he appeared walking across the field with Preecie, Kerker had let it slip to me five minutes before as he was trying to ensure that I'd be there and stay there for when he arrived!!
I felt very privelidged and humble that day.
