Hey up Matrtyn. You ought to have called me bud. I would suggest that as stated, it needs a good boot-full or perhaps a re-tweak. Blak smoke is a sign of too much fuel (or too little air - blocked filter etc) so nothing to owrry about. Give me a call if u need to buddy

Hi Ben

she ran fine over the welsh hills so not to worry too much

One thing that I have noticed. Now we have routed the rocker cover breather pipe back into the air filter assembly, the paper filter is starting to get covered in oil vapour. I wonder if this is ulimatley causing a problem with air flow and the mixture as the filter starts to clog up

Or carb freezing issue. Had this all the time in my 1.9GT with weber carb many years ago as soon as the air temp dropped below 8 degrees and on any trip too. The fact that I had no diverter for the hot air from the exhaust was to blame.
Regards oiled up filter you could fit a catch tank to stop the heavier oil particles, has made a big difference to my car with far less oil coating the inlet pipework..

Made it from some scrap stainless steel tube in our workshop. Undertray is off at present so will whip it off and take some pics. Needs a clean anyway whilst car on SORN.
Pic is of a similar homemade one I had on the 7A engine (top right).
