Riche if yours is FWD and you have the shock that sits on the rear beam then you need some of these..

Ok Guys - I need some help!!
Following everyones comments and instruction on making my own coilovers I set about stripping the first strut to hand - I need to mention at this point that I completly understand the principle in what in what I am trying to achieve.
Where I have fallen down is, I thought by unscrewing the cap over the shock absorber, I was going to then pull out the said Shock absorber that neatly fitted inside the strut, hence when one broke, you were able to replace it
What actually happened was all the oil spilled from inside the strut and each individual part of the shock absorber came out on its own????
IS this standard??
DO I need to replace the whole strut, grind off the spring seat and then weld the conversion kit to the new Shock/Strut.??
Do I bin all the innards from the original strut, as a new replacement DOES fit inside it like I originally thought???????
I need some direction here, berfore I start spending any money, i'm hoping this happened to most people on here when they're dampers have let go
Following this thread I can see people have powder coated they're original housings??

Going for my Dinner know, always thunk better on a full stomach

You have original factory wet struts, never changed since ingolstadt fitted them......

Empty all the bits out and throw them away. Drain out the oil, check that there are no other bits in there, and then you are ready to do your adjustable spring conversion and fit sparkly new inserts. There can't be many left out there like that.......

For extra points can anyone tell me the length of a standard insert - and if anyone has found an alternative shorter insert from something else that I can gain some extra travel with??
Thanks
Bry

I need to know this too!

At a 70mm drop I sit at the bottom of stock (probably original) dampers, so I think I need shorter ones.

Help us both please! I want this done before the summer! Lol

Unbelievably its been a month and I still cant get anyone to tell me how long a standard B2 front shock insert is!! - without me purchasing one that is - and before anyone asks when I took mine of the car they were the original oil filled jobbers and not actually inserts at all.
What I'm hoping is that someone on here has an insert in their garage and can tell me its length??
The reason I 'm asking is that with Audi Dereks info I'm going to do some coilovers but my intention is to go looking for an insert from maybe a golf or something else that is at least 60- 80mm shorter so I can use the full length of the damper with the coilover wound down.

I cant believe - as I write this that no-one has thought of this before??? so if someone has, perhaps they can enlighten me? or tell me why its a bad idea.

It looks like Doninphi above is chasing the same dream.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Bry
