Would agree with the consensus re the plastic door membranes as a serious contender for leaks, but don't rule out the sunroof drain channels - take the roof out & give the surrounds a good clean then try pouring water down the drain channels & just make sure it is draining out where it's supposed to underneath the car before dismantling the door panels. I have previously had soaking wet rear footwells in the Scirocco which were down to the sunroof.

But look at the door membranes, they get slaughtered when alarms/repairs etc get undertaken, the membrane gets ripped/torn or removed. This membrane is critical to keeping the water that runs down the window glass from coming up against the door card, and thus, into the car.
I agree with Simmo, door membranes would be the first place I'd look. They shrink and split with age, even without bodged panelbeating, speaker installation etc. Get some good quality tape, and make sure the edges are fully sealed and a close fit around the door catch. Check carefully for any holes or splits. If too torn replace with plastic sheet from building store.

However, don't rule out sunroof drains and bonnet release cable grommet.

Finding the causes of leaks is a pain, but is something that is intrinsic to old car ownership!

So. Hot sunny day. Carpet pad still sopping under drying carpet. I broke down and took the seat out, trim and carpet. The pictures shows the most likely point of origin. The small amount of water appeared after I hosed the vents and seams at the top of the hood, THEN I pulled the car up to get out of the puddle (To dry pavement). Just after I pulled to a stop I saw the trickle shown in the picture, forward movement may have pushed it back.

The area around the heater bits and firewall seem to be the culprit.

I'm looking for additional thoughts on points of origin, given the flow of water appearing at this little vent scoop on the floor.

I used to be quite good at leak finding.
The easiest way to do this is to employ a helper to spray different areas of suspicion whilst you stay in the car looking for the points of ingress.
Obviously it can take a while for some leaks to manifest themselves but it generally works well.
Get a good flashlight and keep an eye on the usual suspects whilst its being sprayed and youll find it im sure.

So I chased the leak further up, under the front carpet to the corner of the footwell.

Uuug.

Anyone have a "goop" recommendation for resealing this area after cleang it up and fixing the steel with a torch and a patch. There was some kind of factory sealant on this area, seen best from the wheel well. The 3rd picture, which I put something colorful inside the car so it would show.

When I've had carpet up before I've used some spray adhesive, be sure to spray it in the right areas (can be messy) and get it down almost straight away otherwise the glue will dry!

Hopefully going to drive to my Dad's this weekend to fix the leak. 3 hr drive, hopefully not pouring rain, which adds to the difficulty when I arrive.

Perscription calls for, wire wheel, sand blast, rust inhibitor, make patch, weld/epoxy, seam sealer, and paint. Then decide on replacing rotted padding and lay it all back down with adhesive spray and refit the interior. Harummmph. At least I found the leak.
