For your budget I would look at trying to find a big valve ported head. This is the biggest restriction on the I5 10v engines. New one would cost £900 but it releases at least 25bhp + cam another 10bhp. K-jet is reliable and know someone running a slightly modified K-jet on a 20v normally aspirated I5 and getting over 20bhp more than the stock EFi system....
Simple cheap upgrade to 280mm brakes using parts from the Corrado G60. But you need struts from an early series 3 car. Have full details if you're interested. Send e-mail address in PM.
