Actually Frank is right, the more I think about it there were definitely no gas struts on the facelift B2 80's. Was this a mod carried out after too many bangs on the previous owners head? I did this with my 200, I based it on the set up in the V8, the springs had gone soft and the slightest incline or breeze would drop the boot lid firmly on my head! The B3 had gas struts didn't they, they could have come from a newer model.

Here is a picture ( albeit of a very dirty Audi 80 boot area and rear parcel shelf area) showing the tensioned grey metal rods used to power the boot open and allow it to be closed under spring tension.


I'll try and put the picture up again, just for interest but maybe its too boring and has been binned by the bosses?

Here's one I found on google, not seeing a gas strut here
