Thanks for the replies guys.

Petrol stations I use a few different ones, although have only been using BP ultimate for quite a few months.

Done the oil change myself, and check it twice a week (I go and stay with my Grandmother at the weekends and I check fluid levels before I go and again before I head home again) so that can be ruled out.

I'd definitely be looking under the cam-cover, but as above it's likely something more sinister.
NG has vacuum pump running of camshaft, would be nice if it's that!

I'm of the vibrating component view. My WR developed a rattle that was easily reproduced, and which turned out to be the waste gate heat shield. a small crack, resulting in an almighty, and worrying rattle, irrespective of engine load, but appearing with temperature increase, initially, until the crack grew.
A bugger to trace, but relieved when it was.

My mechanic friend said little ends, although he isn't overly familiar with my engine. So an engine replacement or rebuild. Will look at vacuum pump. It's a pain in the ass when it's your daily driver.

Angry Water pump failure and/or stuck thermostat / radiator blockage?

Ok, I should have known better.

I drove to my Grans yesterday evening (~25 miles away). No problems.

Forgot medication, came back home today, just about got home and the car lost power and died.

Lifted the bonnet, Radiator and expansion tank just about freezing cold.

block and head roasting, yet temp gauge on dash in the normal range, and heater inside the car blowing hot.

Could a broken water pump possibly be causing that noise?

Cam-belt? Because of the water pump...

Have just ordered a timing belt kit, with water pump, tensioner pulley and bolt. Wont be here until monday. Guessing but going for the cheapest option first.

Really?

A well worn path you're treading but be prepared to kick yourself if you later find out that it's either:
a) something loose;
b) a really cheap part;
c) the only part you DIDN'T replace

I'd have taken to a garage by now as too often I've bought stuff thinking it'll be the solution only to find the problem still persists.

I have been to 2 different garages, the first told me tappets need adjusting, to which I had to explain they are hydraulic.

Then took it too my regular guy who said it sounded like little ends. But was only guessing He had to many cars to do and hadn't time to look at it properly.

Both him and myself where unaware of the cooling issue as my longest journey (normally is 25 miles) until today when the car lost power and died. Hot engine, cold radiator. Phoned him and he is guessing water pump, might explain the noise too. ( he's 25 miles away too.)

I'm going to remove the thermostat altogether when the engine has cooled in case it has siezed in the shut, although I am guessing that is unlikely?

Any thoughts as i'm grasping at straws.
