The alternator on my v8 died very slowly, a few years back. It started off with just a lower output, noticeable only if you have a gauge and are aware of what it is normally reading, eventually fluctuating sufficient to bring the charging light on very faintly, and intermittently. I managed to nurse it quite a long way by reducing loads. Rather like your symptoms.

You called it mate, Dead Cell in the battery (A brand new Bosch S4 - replaced under warranty)

100% sorted now - thanks for all who helped out!

Glad it's sorted, I had a similar problem with my first Audi 80. Turned out to be something to do with the central locking pump running on. Once I'd pulled the fuse, the battery was fine.

I checked the boot lock as I thought I heard it clicking after locking but it turned out to be only the once and doesn't happen if I open and lock the car from the boot only.

Weirdo wiring in these old cars!
