The diameter of the shaft was greater on the replacement unit, which is why they supply them with new caps and why you cant re-use the originals.

It's the shape of the insert - the cap is designed to fit around it to clamp it in place.

You also don't use bump stops if you go with Bilstein as they have internal ones

Do the top caps come with the inserts then or are they something u have to source separately?

typically aftermarket shocks will come with the caps.

From the dealer, you need to buy caps as individual items

I've spent a while chasing knocks on my 90 front suspension, turned out that the front springs on a B3 are ended but it's not obvious (there's about 8mm in it) get them the wrong way round and they are noisy.

Paint marks should be at the bottom of the spring if they are OE
