That's more than enough if u use web and that's all. Speed doesn't depends on OS, only vista can increase your ping, if u have PC, that barely meets vista's requirements.

Just tried it now (while watch CBeebies at 0830 with 3 kids),

6231 download

271 upload.

That's more like it!

I am paying BT for the privilege of 8MB broadband.

And if I look on BT Hub Manager page:

Broadband connection details:
Downstream 7,424 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps

I guess the BT speed is between my house and the exchange (about 1.5 miles away), after that, it depends on how much traffic is on the rest of the internet.

The line between my house and the exchange (pair of copper wires) is my "personal driveway" and the rest of the internet is the "motorway" I suppose!

What annoys me is that Virgin make you think you have a fibre optic line going to your house (going by their marketing), when in reality it is copper wire, with fibre optic used between cities.

Bin the PC and get a Mac???

I have a Macbook which is 18 months old, and a PC laptop which is 6 months old.

The Mac is so much easier, everytime I turn the PC on, it wants to download half an hour of updates / drivers / etc. ANd I don't even have much software on it, just FIrefox and MS Office!!!

This depends on user - if user have circle fingers, there will be problems Btw default winxp and win vista setups are crap - there is so much unwanted crap... Last time I reinstalled my winxp [at the moment I'm using it, and not slackware], I installed default setup - just to remember, how bad it is - oh, god...

I like my computers to be like my cars.

Just buy one and turn it on, and it should work, without having to take out the engine, gearbox and everything else and put it back together just to get it working!

Yeah, I'm too, only I have different approach - in four years I own this PC, I have changed almost everything, also some hand made cooling solutions - relatively cheap and relatively quiet

Also, if it's running win, it must be tweaked, if linux, maybe not
