I really would not envy anyone having to clear that mess up afterwards Steve.

I think the general public at large have a 'nintendo' approach to physics.... They see it as a game with little or no consequence... Sadly, reality is often less palatable.

I watched that over and over and it doesnt appear that he is gunning it, he was keeping up with the car in front and took some time to approach the van, even the lane change was cautious but he definately got displaced by the slush, such a shame - life is too short, when you consider there are people like that chav in essex reversing in his shitroen paxo down the opposite side of a dual carriageway and only gets nicked, but someone in a navarra gets totalled cause of a mistake, let alone the poor truck driver!

Thats very very bad indeed.

It makes you appreciate the job the police and emergency services have to do in dealing with the aftermath of something like this.
Far too many people have a total lack of idea of the consequences when things go wrong.
That video is very tragic, to be basically minding your own business and then its all over in such a violent manner is pretty shocking.

I once saw the cleanup photos of an absolutely horrific crash in germany, its something thats always stuck in my mind, the sight of what you know was once a person like you or me, reduced to something you might see in a warzone is, well, sobering to say the least.
Its a reminder to us all to be as vigilant as we can and take care.

There is also an argument for central crash barriers on dual carriageways... Something Sussex has historically been slow to recognise.

Thats shocking and tragic.

The nissan navara looks great...but its does not have a good safety record/score
a friend had crash in one...and the pick up was wreck....even at low speed impact.

But then again in that type of crash...side impact....you could say..he would not have survived in any vehicle.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7264155.stm (cant upload bbc report...so have copied it)

Testers say recall 'unsafe' truck
Vehicles
Euro NCap crash tests cars on sale in Europe
The European body responsible for testing new cars has demanded a pick-up truck be recalled after it received one of the worst ever crash safety scores.

Euro NCap said the Nissan Navara's poor design presented a "high-risk of life-threatening injury".

The tests showed its airbags opened too slowly and seatbelts did not provide enough protection during a collision.

But Nissan said the airbag problem was limited to 2008 models and invited owners to have settings changed.

The Nissan Navara scored just one star out of a possible five in the Euro NCAP test. The Isuzu D-Max pick-up truck also scored poorly, gaining only two stars.

BBC transport correspondent Tom Symonds said the Navara was marketed as a "rough and tough" off-road vehicle, which has become increasingly popular as a recreational motor.

He said the tests also found that the "body shell wasn't strong enough and the foot well deformed on impact putting the driver at risk of injuries from the foot pedals".

Euro NCap is an independent body that crash tests cars on sale in Europe, and Nissan has asked it to publish test results for the modified Navara.

I agree speed doesnt look excessive. But hes the major contributory factor in that collision. Look at the road, its coated in ice and snow. It's all about taking information from your surroundings and processing it to make the right choice. The Nivara driver isnt processing it. He should be sat behind the van, resolute that his journey is going to take a while longer, eyes glued to back of the van and the opposite carriageway in reddiness for anything occurring
ahead that he may need to make an evasive move for. Instead he's trying a lane change to pass the van with a HGV coming the other way, so he hasn't even got and escape route if it goes wrong.
COAST.
Concentration, on driving to the absolute exclusion of anything else.
Observation, looking as far ahead as possible
Anticipation,of anything that may occur by reading the information available
Space, create it around your vehicle which will give you
Time, to respond to events unfolding ahead.
and if you do all that, whatever occurs infront of you, you are ready for it and your chance of survival goes through the roof.

The trouble is, so many people switch off when driving and think about a million other things rather than being actually involved in the planning the journey and the job of driving. That's when they get caught out and can't react in time.

Collisions between vehicles don't just happen, there is a build up of events, information available, there to be seen. When it gets missed, is when it all goes tits up and driver error, is the biggest killer.
