i hate bodywork.... overexposed to it... 1998-2000... mates bodyshop... learned a lot though.. mostly that i hate it..

That is impressive to say the least! Not many people would get a result like that first attempt.

The holes or popping you encountered are usually caused by dirty working practices (apologies lol) basically small areas of filler dust under the new filler that pull away when you start to sand.

For anyone doing something similar in the future the simple process is this.

Fill heavily to get the basic shape.

Shape coarsely using a rasp/filler file.

Shape up again and continue with file if needed, if the shape is about right then block with production paper till the surface is flat and just needs minor filling.

Minor filling and production paper if needed or 240 grit wet and dry used wet if your heading towards paint, repeat with filler and wet flatting till surface is smooth and blended in with surrounding bodywork.

Prime and paint.
