Would be nice to find out the vin number as it's got to be one of the earliest surviving B3 80's around at a guess.

registered 22/5/1987. When did they first come out?

They came out in September 1986, I've got a launch pack here with my business card in it

The UK launch was actually December 1986

I wasn't far out then, Dave! I remember reading in What Car (June 1990, I think?) that approx 35% of Audi 90s sold in the UK were quattros, but the ratio for 80s was far, far less.

Correct - far far less, we certainly sold a good number of 90 quattro's and I can only recall 2 80 quattro's that we sold from December 1986. To be honest the new 80's were beautifully built, but somewhat disappointing to drive, lack of performance, being heavier than the Series 2, meagre equipment levels, terrible low geared steering unless PAS was fitted. This was rectified slowly by equipment upgrades, and the 2 litre engines fitted when the catalytic convertor became fitted as standard certainly helped.

The first 90's arrived in 87 and I can still remember them coming off the transporter and thinking that is one hell of a good looking car, the colour coded bumpers, the bigger headlamps and bumper fitted indicators and fogs, plus the chrome effect trim on the bumpers and window surrounds made so much difference.

Agree 100%, Dave. My first 90 was Stone Grey, and an early one, being reg. in Sep 87. Looked so modern at the time. The 80 quattro 1.8 must be one of the rarest quattro variants of all.

Must be - probably rarer than a Series 2 80 quattro, and there's not many 16 Valve quattro's around or 16V Sports for that matter, I mean when they were new, mine was more expensive than 2.0 90 so unless you were bothered about out and out performance, the 90 looked the better car, far plusher and with 5 pots !!

I've got one of these, surprisingly nippy and good fun to drive. Didn't realise they were so rare, I've been abusing mine off road

That looks like a 1990ish spec car with the 2.0 engine. Flat (non sports) seats, lack of alloys/rear spoiler and having elec windows are a bit of a giveaway. Still very rare.

Ahh, very different spec then. Yep it is the 2.0, I think it's a 1989 car.
