Color: dirty blond, with a hint of rusty amber.

Mort

Yes, some.

Rye is great for mixed drinks. Keeps the flavor with soda and what not.
So far I like RYE 1. Limited experience here.

Bourbons........Basil Hayden is my hands down recommendation for smoothness and flavor.
Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig and Jefferson Reserve are nice.

Old Rip Van Winkle 20 yr is off the hook, but pricey.

So, I have finally received a bottle of the Redbreast 15 yr. Pure Pot Still Irish whiskey.
This is from the 2nd Edition, as almost none of the first made it into the United States.
My buddy Jake secured a bottle for me for Christmas.

An excellent whiskey, at twice the price of the 12yr, its still a bargain at $80-85 USD

Color: Like baltic amber, with the faint tinge of green.

Nose: Pert and sweet, baking spices, molases and armagnac brandy (grapes).

Taste:Muscular and resinous, almost oily with a strong sweet warmth from dark, raw wild honey. A hint of other pudding fruits, and at the edges, just a whisper of anise and some phenolics.

A drop of spring water softens the nose, but some how dries out the palette, and throws off the balance created by the higher alcohol content.

Drink this NEAT

Merry Christmas!

Two bottles to compare tonight, never tried these before
Ardbeg 10 yr light
Lagavulin 16 yr rich
any comments, the Ardbeg is winning after the first tasting, but it's early yet

Ardbeg Blasda?

I had a wee dram of the Ardbeg Ultimate Saturday.
Originally I was not an Islay man, but as my palette becomes more seasoned, they are growing on me.

The "Corryvreckan" is my favorite from the line up. For it's subtle complexity but casual brutality.

As for Lagavulin. Meh. They have yet to make a whisky available to the US market from their line that got my attention. They seem to be better as part of a blend. ( But who am I? We like what we like.)

Received a bottle of this from one of my closest friends for Christmas.
MaCallan 15 yr. Triple cask matured, "Fine Oak". European Oak from Sherry, American Oak from Sherry and Bourbon.

Color: Straw, light golden
Nose: Soft oak , sweetness hinting at marshmallow, sherry like.

Taste: Dry, warming, almost astringent. Medium finish, but not quite round on the tongue.

With a drop of still water, the nose becomes buttery with a touch of maple, and the oak becomes predominant on the palate. Overall crisp and fairly clean, neat or with water.

I like this better than other younger and older MaCallan's, and prefer it with a drop of spring water.

Price point $75-80 USD
