Aha that is interesting. I maybe need to get a photo to explain better but I did notice the cold air feed hose is all torn and perished so not sure if this could affect it? Seems a real strange feed to me as its just pointing straight at the back of the head light so its not going to be getting a very good air feed at all! Does seem to be the stock system for it though looking at others

4K is when a 7A ramps up
![]() Does it still cool down if you use the interior heater?

Thats some interesting information. Its hard to say really as the temperature gauge is all over the place, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt, sometimes it goes to zero and bounces back up again. I need to replace then sender which is next on the list. I would however say that when the gauge has been reading at what I would expect to be an accurate reading it has slightly cooled down if I have put the heater on yes.
What I did notice looking round other Audi's at AITP last weekend is most engines of that era (even the smaller engines) have a bigger rad and a double fan. In mine the rad is offset to allow space for the extra cylinder so its a smaller rad and a single fan. Seems to me that with this setup the the 5 cylinder would be more prone to running hot? |

If it is erratic then the temp sender and/or plug/pins/wiring sounds like an issue.
The 5 cyl small chassis cars have the rad offset as you say, its the same in the S2, if everything is in good order the setup can support turbo cars with much higher output than a 7A. It is common to remove the aux rads on S2s, and they have no temp issues. Does your car have a small auxiliary radiator behind the grill between the headlights?

Well you've answered a question there then, there is an empty space with blanked off pipes in front of the rad so thats the aux rad gone then! I do know that the previous owner did go through a period of trying to track down over heating problems before they realised the head gasket had gone- I would imagine it was removed at that point.
Do you know if the thermostats are know to play up at all? |
