As you can see theres a bit of damage to the caliper as the front wheel bearing was fooked and the hub has wobbled around a little, need to remove the burring and strip and replace all the seals

just gouing through my big rally car book by reinhard klein on page 432 to page 435, is all about the mazda 323 4wd it stated that these cars where prone to head gasket problems with the works cars, and that quote "that the mazda passed through all kinds ofhands, in fact but the 323 undouted promise was blighted by lamentably poor management and lack of support from japan. Is your car a 1600 cc or the bigger and better built 1800cc which is the longer wheel base and wider track which made its first appearance in 1990 1000 lakes, It then goes on to say that the arrival of an ex ford engineer, andy thorburn sorted thinks out result are as follows 1987 swedish Salonen harjanne, in gjj o44 then 1988 rally of new zealand in hands of wilson /lewis in Ml8586, 1988, rac rally salonen/ silander in HSR 290, 1989 1000 lakes salonen/ silander GJJ 044 4th overall 1989 carlsson/carlsson HAP 069 7th overall and finally 1989 rally of new zealand carsson/carlsson HSR 290 with a 1st overall and the best result for the car nigel the spec list on the works car are 1623cc turbocharged with 250 bhp and later 1839cc with 275 bhp, 6 speed gearbox 4wd and 1120 kg fighting weight. this article is very interesting with great photos of the car inside and out yet great photo of 1988 car driven by mikkola/ geistdorfr with blown engine and head gasket , as mechinics tipping a jerry can of water over the engine to cool it down , but to no avail. antmore info call me m8

Gab, if you are going to Henley next month, could you bring the book along so I could take some photos of it, Mines the early 1.6 ltr, lots of them have now got the 1.8 engine fitted as its a easier and more reliable option to get the BHP up

Caliper's have been stripped down, pistons polished and the alloy filed back, new seals fitted and rebuilt, I have decieded to keep them just in the plain alloy instead of painting them.

Only 3 more to strip and rebuild

The next little job we have done is rebuild the top mounts, As you can see these bearings are totally shot to fook, theres about 4 mm of play in them, 5 hours searching the tinternet and we managed to find the same make and the same size and spec as the original ones, 10 days later and £62 lighter, these arived from the Fatherland.

They look better Nige. Are they press fit into the housing or held in with the circlip? I'd guess with the circlip.

I poped down to my friendly Mazda dealer yesterday to as about some Brake splash shields for the car, I managed to find the part numbers for the rally shields so of I went with debit card at the ready

As you can see they are made from a mesh to aid in the cooling

Yes, the man said, they are still avalible, great said I, can I have 4 please ??

Are you sure he said

Yes please, why ??

Then he hit me with the price............................................. .......£400 each plus VAT

I shall not be getting any of these,

So Dont moan to much about AUDI prices, they all of a sudden seam rather cheep to me
