Does anyone know how to revive the silver strip that goes around both the Windscreen and the rear window on the Audi 80?
I hope Coxy doesnt mind me using his photo too much, its the same as his in this photo, only mine is, lets say..... a tad tarnished after 23 years! ![]() Im guessing a replacement would only (Possibly) be available from the Main Dealers, but how to fit it, does the old one just pop/prise out? As ever - Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sie! ![]() |

I'll have a look at mine tomorrow and telll you what I think, but not sure if they have some crappy like plastic top coating on them which kinda makes them age and look yellowy.

I thought they were plastic foil with only the centre coupling piece (brighter metal piece in the pic) being metal. . . I may be wrong.

I think the silver colour is inside the plastic, so when it fades it's not possible to renovate it. I had partial success on the same trim on a BMW by coating it with silver sellotape gift wrap tape, but sadly after the car had been left out in the sun, it went brown.
I suppose you could do a similar thing using pipe lagging tape (you know, the self adhesive tin foil tape). You'd have to cut thin strips and apply this, then refit the trim carefully to avoid damaging the surface of the tape. At least this would change colour like the plastic tape did. I've seen people use washing up liquid to ease the plastic trim back into the rubber, but seeing as this can damage rubber, and contains salt, you'd be better off using baby shampoo, wash 'n' wax or even something like hair gel. |

That ali tape is certainly bright, but it shows up every crease and is a pain to get right. I've heard toothpaste is good for window brightwork

From my personal experience, once taken off its almost impossible to put it back again without removing the windshield.
I've been trying to find a solution for this for a while, went to Carglass stores ans stuff but nothing. ![]() |

On my audi 100 1988, theres a trim like that around all the windows and at the rim of the glass in the interiors.
They are metal on mine, i used metal polish and they came up a treat. |

There definately plastic on the 80's, have them round the windscreen, rear window & the rear quarter glass. The metal clip which hides the ends/joins comes off easy enough & goes back on OK too you just need a flat screwdriver the plastic trim comes out easy too once you get it started again with a flat screwdriver but it's a pig to get back in & brittle. I'm currently looking at covering in chrome vinyl my mates been getting a few samples together because the chrome vinyls usually thick but there's a couple that are pretty thin almost like a cast vinyl which they use for vehicle wraps so should bend n hold its shape well. If it's succesful I'll stick some pics up of how it turns out.
