Z (sign without meaning)

A Ingolstadt (place of manufacture) N= Neckarsulm, E= Emden

106425 sequential numbering

At the first line on your sticker you see the numbers 09-1 which means your Audi was built on the first day of calenderweek 9 (Monday, 28.02.1983)

Here's a interesting page for the B2 drivers. It's in german but translation shouldn't be a problem.

Greetings
Thank you very much for the info. Very much appreciated. The 85 meaning it should be a quattro is interesting and a little confusing as it definitely isn't. What makes it more interesting (for me) is she was built 5 days after my 22nd birthday and my dad collected her on the 1st April.

Hi Chris, maybe this help you.

Type 81 or Type 85?

In fact, this question still moves the minds of the scene to this day;
a definitive and clarifying answer could not be found for a long time.

The fact is that chassis and part numbers of the coupé bodies start with 85...,
that of many notchback bodies (regardless of whether it has two or four doors) with 81...

Nevertheless, the inscription "Type 81" is clearly recognizable on the type plate,
if it is a front-wheel drive vehicle, regardless of year of manufacture or body style:

What the logisticians of the still young Audi AG (officially still "Audi NSU Auto Union AG" at that time)
may have thought almost 40 years ago when they assigned the product codes for the B2 models,
will probably remain in the dark of history.

Many misinterpretations circulate about the numbers 81 and 85 in the scene;
so the numbers do not represent the year of release, nor do they differentiate coupes from sedans,
and neither mean "before" or "after" the facelift of the B2 series in 1984.
For example, the predecessor model Audi 80 B1 (1972-1978) is listed under the model numbers 80 and 82...

It was agreed today to call the front-wheel drive models in the series the Type 81,
the all-wheel drive models accordingly as Type 85.
This applies regardless of body shape and number of cylinders.
They all have the series designation B2 in common.

This nomenclature is also represented by the manufacturer himself.

You are a mind of very useful info. I've always known her as a Type 81.
I hope others on the Forum find this thread as welcome and as useful as I have

The first link you sent is in German when I opened it. The second I can't open. I'll try later when I'm on my PC at home.

Some more info

Audi Coupé GT5E 2.2 liters, 130 hp
At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1982, Audi presented a long-awaited innovation to the public - the Audi Coupé GT5E with the five-cylinder injection engine known from the Audi 100, which in the Coupé draws an output of 130 hp from a displacement of 2,144 ccm. The most powerful and fastest Audi coupé before the big facelift in August 1984 was already close to the 200 mark with its top speed of 196 km/h. The consumption of 6.5 l/100 km at 90 km/h and 13.3 liters in the city cycle was only slightly higher than that of the GT5S. The Coupé GT5E was only delivered with a sporty 5-speed manual transmission, which, thanks to its tuning, ensures high tractive power over a wide speed range. The driver was therefore able to move the coupé comfortably without shifting gears.

In order to do justice to the performance plus, internally ventilated brake discs were installed on the front axle. In addition, the chassis and the steering geometry have been modified and the caster of the front axle has been increased in order to achieve better straight-line stability at higher speeds. The standard 14-inch aluminum wheels with 185 tires not only suit the sporty coupé very well, they also improve handling a little. For improved handling, power steering was included in the basic price of DM 26,335. At an additional price of only 2600 DM to the GT5S, the GT5E was certainly an interesting offer, even if the new top coupé did not differ from its carburettor brother on the outside. Only the subtle "5E" badge in the radiator grille revealed who you were looking at.

As with the other coupés, the coupé GT5E from model year 1982 is also equipped with a headlight cleaning system. Incidentally, the first vehicles did not have the electronically controlled idle speed control, which can only be found from model year 1983 on the engine with the code letter "KE". These vehicles can be recognized by the twin headlights with chrome covers that were still installed in the 1982 model year.
