Time honoured way of doing a quick and dirty belt change
It doesn’t allow for any examination of the bearings in anything being driven by the belt, water pump, tensioners for example, but outwith that, does the job

The cutting approach won't help on the i5, will it? The crank pulley still has to come off to get the belt from around it.

I'm not worried about getting things lined up, it's just the hassle of the very tight bolt that causes me trouble.

No, the cutting method won t work on our cars. I have the locking tool you can borrow. I also bought the 450nm torque wrench but it's a bit big to post!
Screwfix had them on offer last year and as I do so many, I jumped at it.

It wouldn't hurt to get a quote for the job?! Would be interesting to hear what they come back with ?

I had the 2079 extender tool but it's pretty useless unless the car is on a ramp. There's no room for it above so you can only use it below.

I sold it and just use a bigger torque wrench.

The cost of the tools is about the cost of getting a garage to do the job so they pay for themselves quickly.

Is that specifically on the ur-quattro? I don't remember having to lift the car to use it when I did mine on my coupe quattro. It was ages ago though, so I might be wrong about that. I do remember having to go somewhere to get a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter for it.

Was on my ur at the time and also the Coupe quattro T85.

B3s are much easier as the front comes off

I only do 3 to5k a year normally, less last year for obvious reasons and car off the road though Nov to March and change mine religiously every 6 years but always use highest quality conti belts. As others I made my own locking tool and use a 3/4" socket and torque wrench. Best to also change bottom belt pulley and bolt...

If you change the bottom pulley, you don't need to undo the big bolt, and you don't need to remove the front bumper...yes?

Sorry but to change pulley and cambelt that brute of a bolt has to come out. Bit of a design flaw maybe but to be fair it ensures you check the condition of the crank seal whilst its off.
