Following on from my road trip my car is back and it has been confirmed that the camshaft pulley bolt had come undone and the pulley had slipped the shaft. I carried out a compression test prior to commencing head removal which revealed cylinders 1&4 to be without compression. I removed the head with both manifolds an the turbo attached which significantly speeded the job up. Number 1 inlet and number exhaust valves had taken the hit but closer inspection of the piston crown revealed number 2 exhaust had also contacted. New valves and gasket set ordered updates to follow.

Hi Pete, we were and did have a great trip! If I'm going to be honest it's already just another memory/funny story from our road trip and a valuable lesson learnt.

Planning on just taking the marks off of the crowns or going deeper?

It’s going to be fine, if you can strip it down and crack on that quick yourself, then I’m sure you’ll quickly work through the fix

Looks very similar to the one I did recently. Just check the valve guides are ok. A little wear is normal on these engines but excessive play will need addressing.
I was working on a 20v engine and had to replace all 10 intake valves! |
