Spot on Jeff, my 80 CD saloon had the same WN lump, fantastic engine but very troublesome carb on them.
Rebuilt mine it ran like clockwork afterwards until it went out off tune again.

Hey Mark
Trying to remember, was it a Solex carb?

I remember mine icing up on a dark & very foggy Nov evening during a trip from Durham to Cirencester.
Cut out in the middle lane of heavy traffic. That was interesting !!!!!!

Turns out the hot air feed tube from the manifold had gone walkabout, probably somewhere on the A1

Reasonable guess Solex, they were on so many different cars back then.

1.9 WN lumps ran Piergurgs Geof from memory, hold on,...........just checked my manuals, the WN ran the Pierburg 34/34 2B5 carb.

Seam to remember virtually all Audi of that period ran Pierburg carbs ( 81-83 ) except the obvious Ur Quatt, 100 200 top of range turbo cars.

Ask me why i still have one of those new hot air feed tubes? Same thing happened to me, engine completely died.
It was fine after 5 mins or so when it all became warm under there from heat soak, but high speed traveling was a no no in cold weather without that tube.

You could buy a long length of that bendy tightly corrugated tube from German and Swedish which you just cut of what you needed.

Fuel consumption was amazing though if you remember.
