Default Car storage

Morning all,

Been a while since I was on here last. Not a lot's changed my end save for selling on the RS6 and moving to an A8 4.2V8 petrol

I've begun doing some research around purchasing a large barn/commercial space in the sticks around Hampshire - Southampton or Winchester waywith a view to selling plots to store/work on cars.

I wanted to gauge whether anyone on here would be interested in such a facility and enquire as to:

A - what facilities you would want at the site (there would be toilets, water & electric as well as a secured CCTV building and the cars would be inside a dry unit)
B - what sort of price you would be comfortable in paying per month for such a service?

As well as offering a space for your car (I'm thinking around 20ftx10ft allocated) and a lockable cupboard) I would like to know if any of the following would appeal:

Full snap on (or similar quality) tool set which could be hired for the day;
Ventilation to your exhaust to lower the fumes associated with running indoors;
Ramp (could be included in initial price) or hydraulic lift (which would need to be booked and separately charged);

Thoughts and suggestions would be most welcomed.

Thanks

David

I'd suggest the people bring there own tools, snap on stuff is expensive and too easy to go missing.

I've heard of people doing this kind of thing before. Make sure you know/trust who is coming in. Its not bad if its audi people, they are generally a lot better than chav/nova/corsa crews.

Another option is just have bays with ramps/lifts in and rent them by the day

I would personally vett each applicant as I know the sort you speak of!

Ramp would be a single bay that would be bookable.

Tools I understand the risks inherent but wanted to try and offer something different /more inclusive

Insurance would be an interesting topic too with the potential to destroy a fair amount of pride and joys.

I think you may also need to be a little careful when it comes to extraction its not as simple as it sounds. There all sort of consideration required environmental and all that.

Then there is the fact of flammable liquids kept indoors (Fuel in tanks etc), insurance again.

Training for those that would use the ramps and equipment and so on.

Its a good idea and all depends on what people are willing to spend. Could I free up £100+ a month no probably not, £50 maybe.

You would probably be better off with a a storage only based business and build from that. For example classic car/vehilce/caravan stroage, plenty of people with caravans need to store them in winter.

Forget snap on.
The plastic cased tool kits from Halfords professional are cheaper, self contained, and relatively easily policed, if you really wanted to go down that line.
Anyone wanting to take part in DIY would be better advised to have their own kit, though, as then they would know if they are sufficiently prepared for the task.

Audi special tools are another matter. There are a number of specials for such jobs as Cam belt replacement. Many could be made by a good tool maker. I know of one very knowledgeable chap who has made a couple of tools for me.
Having these on a rent/loan with a security deposit would probably be popular. But it would have to be handled as a loan within a club, or issues of insurance and liability would come into play.

Limit the type of work being considered. You'd want to know that the ramp/bay would be vacated in time.

For what it's worth, I'm very interested. I'm storing 3 cars at a cost of about £800 for 6 months. But the space is limited.
As you know, I've been thinking along similar lines.

How is it strange (other than me living in Hampshite)?

1.5 million people live within 15 miles of the site I have in mind which includes both upmarket areas (Winchester/Lymington) and less so.... Eastleigh

It's also less than an hour from the M25.

Granted locations are more expensive round this way but I'm not going to get into this sort of thing if it's going to be hours away from my house!

Not in a shirty way, genuinely curious!
