Unhappy B2 Audi 90 Quattro Engine replacement or rebuilt?

Hi..its been long time since my last post in audi classic forum.

Let me reintroduce my self..my name is Aiman from Malaysia currently have 2 1985 Audi 90 quattro.

One of my 90q recently went to cambelt change. After clear to return home, oil pressure light came up. Then i get back to my mechanics to rectify but the mechanics said everything was check and the light might be due to oil pressure warning switch. Switch were not replaced and i went home afterwards.

The next day went to car wash and one fella told me the engine was making diesel like noise. I checked oil level and notice it well below minimum level.

My question:-

1. Could this be the conecting rod bearing failure? I dare not start the engine afterward comcerning further damage could be possible.

2. Which is more cost effective, to rebuilt the engine or find the good secondhand engine?

3. What type of engine suitable to directly replace without modification? -currently the car is on KV engine.
The problems is not many audi 90 quattro here. Is Audi 100 C3 engine compatible?

4.if possible, then what is the engine code, NG, NF? Are they direct bolt on? Please enlighten.

I cant imagine of the car went to scrapyard due to no replacement engine.

Please help...

Regards

1) Likely, failed main bearings shouldn't make any noises at idle.

2) You tell us, it's unlikely that anyone here is from malaysia, so nobody will know how much would cost repair there, what's the part availability and what's the availability and prices for another engine

3) Earlier C3 have KU engine. It's basically the same KV.

4) Well, you can put it in there, but not all existing parts could be reused. I don't remember about KV, NG and NF2 has injectors in intake manifold, while NF1 in head. Also if you want to use NG/NF2 intake manifold, you should use intake boot from B3/B4 NG.

Thanks for your response sir.

I guess im the only one from Malaysia?
Having these car is really nightmare to maintain for some. Theres no enthusiast club for these older model of Audi here thus technical information is limited.

I'll try to source an early c3 with KU engine if that the easiest way to get this car running again. The car will sit for a long time until an ideal engine could be found. Too bad for my favorite daily driver car.

Otherwise, i have to find the replacement conrod bearing with the hope that no other engine internal required replacement too. By the way.. Do you know the part number for KV conrod bearings?

Sorry to hear about the engine failure, really surprised btw as I have not heard before of bearing failure on a KV engine. What type of oil is used?

Normally will get Shell Helix HX5 15w-40 for oil change with additive (STP or bardahl) added between intervals. Mechanics suggest this oil suitable to older engines. However service intervals may be shorter compared to semi syn or fully syn oils.

The fact that the engine were running dry of oil might be the reason for this failure. The warning light was working, but ignored, plus false advise from mechanics.

15W40 is fine for these engines, but running low on oil is no good idea

Depending on amount. From experience, 4 pot engine has problems with oil supply when oil level is 1 liter BELOW MINIMUM - 2 litres less than should be in the sump - wouldn't have noticed, but I had to drive before warming up engine, and while oil was still cold, noticed shaky oil pressure gauge, causing me investigate further; dipstick had a drop of oil at the very end. I presume 5 pot engines has similarly.

Of course, if the car experiences hard cornering, then even maximum amount of oil could be not enough.
