Excluding anything french or vauxhall, options seem to be -
Fabia Octavia Golf Hyundai i40/30 Kia cee'd Seat ibiza Volvo v40 Dacia logan (!) Focus All various forms of blue-tec-eco-greenline-dynamic-i-drive-tec-eco-blue-baby-seals-and-flowers-diesel-soot-generators. (slow in other words) Just drove one today, amazingly slow, road noise from hell and made of tin, but I won't be driving it. What would you get if there was a gun to your head? (I'm the one holding the gun, and a shoe horn and I still can't get her out of the allroad. But it's toast, got an offer of £1500 trade-in for it, which would not be easy to acheive in any other way, certainly not ebay!) I take it none of them have a warranty like Kia? Any ideas? Worked out though over five years, for a two year old car with about 10k miles on it, taking time lost fixing cars, and hence not working, into account, you're no better off really running old ones, just take on a load stress for no reason. |

Forget the dacia, the ride is dreadful.
Out of that lot, thinking ride and reliability, either a kia or hyundai. It's not at all cool to say it, 10 years ago I wouldn't have, but now they're building some cracking cars But personally, I'd get something older. I bought a 2003 ibiza 1.9 tdi for 700 quid in September. I drive the balls off it everywhere, it goes like stink. Over 15k miles, it's done 50mpg and all its had is a tax disc, a service, a cv joint and some tyres. Yep, a few electrical bits don't work right, but given the price, I really don't care.

want to be out in the hills on my bike in summer, but no chance unless the kid mobile is basically new or under warranty. There's a guy in the town here with an i40, looks... eastern.. but smart enough. Just found a wee fabia 1.2 that's supposed to average about 80mpg. 94 'official' extra-urban. It is small though! . "supposed" is the correct word. It might be economical while you're spending your time in traffic jams, but once you're starting to move, it's not economical anymore, due to lack of power, which needs to be compensated by heavy use of throttle.
In one of our local forums, intended for just about any driver, there's a chap, around ~40 years old, who choses his cars and thinks about cars in general in a way that usually other people laughs. His previous car and currently second car was Opel meriva 1.3 CDTI, bought new, still in his possession, because while 1.3 diesel might be desirable for someone in UK for insurance purposes, over here it's just weak and thirsty so logically very rare engine, and nobody wants it. Currently he's driving koda fabia 1.2, bought new outgoing model car - the fuel economy figures he's posting - well, I would stick to mk3 golf with 2.0 8v engine - at worst such golf would be a bit less economical in city and around the same on road - guess which one would go better. |

I notice that horse and cart aren't listed. I small oversight?
It has the added advantage that if you don't like it, you can always have a bbq and eat it. The horse that is.

![]() As regards cars...recent experience with a Skoda was very good, fantastic value for money with all the VAG advantages, but not the big spend....but re-sale values a bit of a problem , at least in my experience. Maybe still the badge culture ? |
