Well with all my grief with the radiator things have been a bit slow. Its now a year since I embarked on this project, in the days before I was a father I would have turned this around in a month!

When converting a car to standalone management the number one job is to get it to idle correctly, this is something a lot of people ignore in thier rush to get out and drive, but time spent getting the car to start and idle like factory pays dividends in the long run.

It was while trying to do this that my radiator gave up the ghost, that put me back three months as I found a replacement! Its now clear that this engine block has some serious coolant blockage issues, probably due to poor maintainance in the past. The block drain was so badly blocked that it was possible to remove the plug and run the car without leakage! I had a cunning plan for that, I took a 12" long piece of 3/16" stainless cable (like a really thick clutch cable) and put one end into my cordless drill... I then stuffed this up the block drain (ooohh err) with the drill on half speed. Did a brilliant job and I got covered in orrible oily rusty gunk!
I then flushed the engine with de ionised water a couple of times. I then fitted a new genuine water pump and a genuine thermostat.(expensive but sooo superior to aftermarket)

Got the engine running and over the last week or so have tuned the idle and cold start, it now starts on the key with no throttle and settles into an idle of about 900rpm. I'm yet to set up closed loop idle.. that can wait I have it idling at 12 degrees and about 13.8-14.0:1 AFR.. seems rich, but this is because I changed it to bank fire rather than sequential. Its only at idle that this makes a difference and I can live with it. I'd love to know what the ignition timing at idle was from the factory, but can't find the info anywhere!

Each time its been through one of these tuning cycles I leave it a couple of hours then drain the radiator and block before refilling it with de ionised water. I also add a disolved dishwasher tablet to help with the cleaning (an old trick) the last few times the water has come out pretty clear, but last night a blockage must have cleared as the water came out very very brown! Hopefully a couple more cycles and I can refill with an antifreeze/mix.

Oh and I suppose more importantly, I reversed the car out of the garage and then back in again! i.e my megashift transmission controller works! at least in reverse and first!

I've now driven the car on the road (illegally!) and everything appears to be working as it should

Trying to decide if I should now park it for winter or tax and insure it so I can get on with mapping the ECU.. I've never taken it out in the rain..

Default Long time lurker - first post

Hi there Addicted, may I say this is a great thread, thanks for sharing your knowledge and congratulations on getting yours running well.

I want to use a 30V 2.8 in my Karma Dino and would like to use MegaSquirt as well, having used it in a couple of my other cars and t'internet search brought me here!

I don't suppose you would be willing to share more details and maybe your MSQ file?

Regards R

Hello RachaelJF,

I'm afraid nothing from my install will be any use to you

Mines a 12v so neither my spark or fuel maps will be suitable for the 30v

Mine uses the hidious Audi triple trigger for ignition, the 30v uses a lovely 60-2 wheel..

You are very lucky, I wish I'd fitted the 30v, its such a nice engine! and much easier to megasquirt..

Ah, so Motronic. Well that's great news, thank you very much! I was having some trepidation but looking forward to the project now - I'll still be following your thread with interest though!

Thanks again! R

Would this work on a 2.6 v6 auto?

I'm not familiar with the management system on the 2.6, I believe it differed from the 2.8. However Megasquirt can be configured to run just about any engine (I suspect that the Audi triple trigger on the 2.8 is one of the hardest, so after that everything else is easy)

The trans is exactly the same so my Megashift would run it fine.
