Phew! You know when you just think, have I actually been tightening it..

It's p*ssing down outside here now, but forecast for tomorrow is mostly dry, so im going to get a longer pipe wrench and some box section. Hopefully with a bit of heat and the jacking lever over the breaker bar, I will do it this time. Thanks everyone who replied, your expertise, is much appreciated.

If I do it, then I will put up some pics on the forum, to hopefully inspire anyone else in same situation. If not then I guess it's going to the professionals, but tbh I really hate anyone else working on my car. I know it's only worth a bag of nuts, but I just like doing things myself, so I know its been done the best way and not the quickest.

Cheers

Finally got around to doing the Cambelt and water pump on my Audi 100 2.3 10v (AAR engine) last weekend.

The new cambelt is sliding forward (towards the front of the car) off the upper pulley and water pump. It is moving about 3-4mm off the pulleys and causing a loud noise rubbing against the lower cambelt cover, if I leave the car running more than a few mins you can smell burning as the belt rubs.

So my question is, what is supposed to center the belt on the pulleys and what have I done wrong so that my belt is trying to work its way off?

Hope someone can help, ive re-fitted the belt and tensioner twice now and its still doing it. If I bend the lower metal cover so that it does not touch the belt I am concerned the belt will slide off the pulley completely.

Yikes indeed!! The crank pulley should align the belt, no? Sounds like it's sitting proud of it's original position maybe? someone will know! just don't use it.

I thought the crank pulley should alighn the belt, I cant see what else would, but mine doesn't seem to want to stay on.. I bent the metal lower cover a bit to push the belt over, but it has not helped.

I thought he belt must be to tight, so loosened it as much as I dare, but no change.

I'm completely stumped! Thought getting the crank bolt off would be the difficult bit of this job - i was wrong, dunno what to do now.

Anyone any idea what is causing my cambelt to slip off the pulley? I use this car a lot and really need it sorted. The tensioner, water pump and belt are new. Can anyone help please or recommend a temp fix so i can drive it to a garage?

Are both tensioner pulley and water pump new and properly installed? I presume that any of those parts with incorrect alignment could steer belt to one side or another.

I had early NG which had belt a couple milimetres over the edge, together with compression readings, lower towards the end of engine, making me believe that head was incorrectly ground in the past, but this is not the case.

Hi, i installed the lot, so could be fitted wrongly! I think i did the belt a bit tight the first time, i only ran the engine for about 5mins before i loosened it. Could that have damaged something? The belt is as loose as i dare now. Could i bend the tensioner bracket to push the belt the other way do you think. I just cant think of what coulb be wrong.

Why not refit (if you still have it?) the old water pump?
Process of elimination!
