some times a good thin engine flush and service can help, with GOOD OIL.
Castrol, Mobil 1, Quantum, etc, etc, 15-40 semi or 10-60 fully synthetic

The biggest problem I've always had with 5 cylinder engines is them sounding tappety after a good leadfoot workout. New, good oil and still I get it, maybe an oil cooler might be a good bet ?

I can live with the odd rattle when cold unless it takes ages to go away.

I had noisy tappets on start-up when left for a while also, probibly normal considering the 206,000 miles! but I also read this:

Quote:
As I mentioned previously, only use a genuine V.A.G. oil filter, or one from M.A.N. or Knecht (0C47 for general fit VW/Audi filter). These two last manufacturers make the filters for V.A.G., and you should find that they are cheaper than the ones from the dealers. These filters also contain a non-return valve which some of the cheaper filters do not have. This is to prevent the oil that is up on the top of the cylinder head from falling back down to the sump when the engine is switch off.
Going to give it a try as mine was running an aftermarket filter that had no non-retun valve. Makes sense that the oil would eventually drain back into the sump without the valve. Worth a try!! I will report back when I finally get mine started up again

Thanks for replys chaps, the car is a 89 2.2 C3 quattro KU, so looks like quality 15/40 mineral and genuine filter is the best way to go, are we all agreed
cheers Bill
