Did you take the steering wheel off when you took the cluster out? If so then there is your 'fault'
If you ever find yourself in yorkshire, pop by.i have a gadget which amongst other things can correct mileage on certain early digital vag cars (all b5 a4s).not c4 a6s though which is the reason I bought it ![]() |

Vagcom will clear the aibag light. It's because, as stated above, you possibly removed the airbag whilst the battery was still on.

Thanks for all the help
I did leave the steering wheel on and I did leave the battery on so its totally my fault for being to lazy. I nearly bought myself another cheap 80 yesterday it was even in the same green as my 80 cabriolet and my A4 although it would have been a long road trip to pick it up, but I don't mind that as my current 80 was a 700 mile round trip. It went on ebay for £205 and had a ticket till next April a full history and had only done 92000. If the auction would have finished today I would have most probably gone for it as I'm yet to find out if the A4 will be costing a small fortune due to all of these horrible modern expensive safety systems. The 80 would have been great as it was a base spec car with keep fit windows a carb no cat and no abs so likely no expensive bills also it was a manual so would probably achieve over 30mpg and even had a lovely retro 80s kenwood cassette player. The A4 is in now for the ticket so its fingers and toes crossed, I did notice on the drive down to the Mot station that the brakes made a bit of a grind when I applied an emergency stop, but I'm hoping its more to do with lack of use as its been sitting in my leaky garage now for over six months. No I didn't disturb anything but I did leave the battery on while I took the cluster out.
The thing is I've just been down to pick the car up expecting the worse and all it failed on was a outer Cv gaiter and an advisory on a cracked front number plate so I really can't complain. That's the 3rd mot I've put the old girl through and all I've ever done to her is changed the odd filter and oil and a set of front disks and pads plus a new clutch about 3 1/2 years ago. I can now big up the A4 again and say their a good motor, I can honestly say its the best car I've owned except for my 80 of course. I think it helps though being a very early one as it shares the same 1.6 as an 80 so maybe thats why its so good ![]() |

Well, next time don't forget to disconnect battery when you're changing flat tyre. Maybe changing tyre with battery on will also cause airbag malfunction. At least it will be as good reason as instrument cluster removal.

I feel better knowing that it wasn't down to me then and it makes live easier when I fit the new one in knowing I don't have to disconnect the battery every time.

If my car would be equipped with working airbags, I would disconnect the battery before removing any of them - just because - but otherwise I don't bother. I've done major soldering jobs, like climate control installation, leaving the battery connected, car has been welded several times with battery connected, without any problems, apart from a couple of blown cigarette lighter fuses several years ago caused by bare lighter socket shorting to ground. As for the new cars, the same principles should apply, of course, the electronics now are more complex, so turning ignition on with something half disassembled might cause fault code for some device, but this is not your case, as you left everything related to airbags in place.

I'm still waiting for the vag com lead to come but in the meantime I put the bulb back in the old dash and went out today in the old girl.
But what's weird is now the airbag light goes out again but only after a minute or so and not after a few seconds with the other warning lights. |
