Default Rear shocks

Apologies mods, didnt mean to post this in electrical!

My rear passenger shocky (area) makes a clicking / clunking on a dropped or rough surface, lots on a rough surface in fact, the last guy gave me a shocky insert and 2 x top rubber bushes (big castellated ones) but I cant see how to expose the top of the rear shock. Its quiet over a speed bump and smooth so is it loose at the top? dunno. The noise seems high up, inside the car. Clattery.

Also the front passenger spring creaks and twangs when turning the steering?

Next, when I let in the clutch too quick, I get a thump under my feet, im thinking g/box mount at the rear, anyone concur or advise different?

Lastly the shift is sloppy, is there a ghetto fix to tighten it up? Anyone got a pic of the mechanism?

Cheers!

It really wouldn't be bad to know if are we talking about zaporozhets or lada!

If seriously, rear shock noise reminds me about noise made by previous front shocks of my A90q, damn clatter when driving on gravel roads, caused by the fact, that the car in the past was heavily abused, so the shocks had partially given up - apart from the annoying sound, the car was a bit too soft, no wonder why - after spring removal turned out that shock on first push is very soft, only becoming hard afterwards.

As for the clutch, could be worn out CV joints, front differential or clutch plate springs.

After looking around, seems that we're talking about B4. In that case, try to pull up gear stick - if it goes up for several centimetres, you've found problem with gear shift, if no, get used to that.

cheers mate. sorry yes its a B4 TDI if the first post didnt give it away, 1z etc etc

The clutch if let in gently is ok, and bites fine, theres a thud on the floor under my feet like a hammer blow if not, surely thats an engine mount or gearbox mount.

The shock absorber is clattering inside the car at the back, thats why I asked about the top mount bush, how do you expose the mounting nut?

Removing or lowering backrest, depending of the rear seat folds down or not, and, I guess, there should be some trim pieces around. Good luck with top mount change, that was my first thought about my previous front shocks as well. I hope you have spring compressors at hand, I presume you will need a pair.

IIRC FWD gearbox mount is on left side of the car and engine mounts are way forward...

ok cool, yeah it has droppable rear seats. I guess I have to get digging in there cos the clatter is driving me nuts.

On the outside, theres a big metal box over the rear struts? If I remove that box will it be obvious when the upper rubber is worn?

No, I guess. I have no idea how does look like B4 FWD rear top mounts as I have only experience with B3 quattro front and rear top mounts, which is the same stuff that you have in front. As for them, if new one is at hand, the shape could be compared. In any case, since you have the new parts, you will change them anyway - only get those damn spring compressors first [if you don't have them].

Hi mate, sorry for the outburst the other night, I had a really sh1tty day and it was one thing too many. Sincerely sorry. The last thing I want to do is fall out with people.

Anyway, I only have the new shock insert but I think the top mount is loose somehow because it rattles inside the car when going over a dropped surface. The top of the strut on the rear is different from the front, in that it has a big metal section thats shaped like a weird pastie, or maybe a badly made swiss roll thats been sat on. Or a calzonie.

Thats what I think is rattling - the top mount nut or 2 that are buried under a mound of interior trim. I knew it was too easy getting the car lol. It is smooth and quiet over an undulating road, and only makes a noise when the surface drops in level suddenly.
