Thanks For all the help

Is it a matter of opening up a screen and manually typing the new mileage in once I've bought a lead and downloaded the software to the laptop as computers have never really been a strong point for me.

Is there any way I could make things worse if I'm not careful

Your best bet would be to get on a local VW/Audi forum to you, and see if someone could do it for you. There are things that can go wrong when writing an eprom!

It can also be tricky to get the cable set up on the right comm port if the user is a beginner.

Thanks it may be best if I do get someone else to look at it.

I've had the old girl now for 3 years and it is a reliable old workhorse, its now semi retired as it will only be used for 6 months of the year during the winter months so I guess even with the correct lower mileage it won't be worth much anyway.

I guess the worst case scenario would be not to worry to much about the mileage on the clock and if I ever sold it just inform the new owner,

I guess at the end of the day even though the car is in excellent condition and with low mileage it still is only worth £350 as when it gets to that age its more a case of does it stop and start and does it have an MOT.

Practicalities wise, given the value, I'd simply not worry about it. If the car is reliable and likely to be kept by you, just fit the replacement and be done.
If it was a car with serious value, history, etc, then that might be another matter.

Thanks I will do just that.

I will have a play around with the cheap Vag com lead as I will need to turn off the airbag light for the ticket as I think the mot has changed recently so I won't be able to just take the airbag bulb out.

But I may be lucky and find the airbag error light may be a problem with the old cluster.

Thanks Msh for all the advice with my old car.

I think the Airbag light was actually my fault and not the car as I took the old cluster out and cleaned the circuit board and when I reinstalled the cluster the airbag light was on.

I guess it didn't help with me taking the cluster out while the battery was still connected.

I hope the cheap lead will turn it off, I have the dreaded MOT tomorrow and the lead and cluster don't arrive to the end of the week, I've taken the bulb out of the old cluster and reinstalled the old dash for now, but I think that's also an MOT failure.

Yes, it was your fault - you cleaned the contacts and previously broken light started to work. It is simply bulb, which is connected to ignition and airbag control unit. Nothing else.
