Default anyone been to Tallinn?

I have a couple of places that I would love to visit and Tallinn has always appealed.

Has anyone ever been there, have any tips, places to avoid, places to visit, places to eat etc etc.

My last 3 holidays have been Prague, Budapest and Krakow and loved all three of them.

Yes we went a few years ago, we actually stayed in Helsinki and took the boat across. It's a pretty small place, well the old own is, but its stunning (a bit like Prauge) eating, drinking etc is all local and just off the main square and everything was good. We spent a couple of hours at the museum which was interesting and rest of the time just walking around the narrow streets.

Beautiful city but plan to get out about if your there more than a couple of days because its very small.

Andy....

it would only be for a long weekend, I get bored anywhere after 3 days anyway so probably 2 or 3 nights most.
I'm guessing apart from the old town, and the museum, the rest would be more about enjoying the food and local cuisine then?

Yeah it's an old town and very interesting but sitting in the square with some good food and a beer it's the way to spend your time....

yes, loads of times... usually in January when minus temperatures as par of the course.

Old town is where it is at, very hospitable people, great food - excellent beer. The microbrewery www.beerhouse.ee is home to my favourite beer in the world "Medovar Honey" however dont let that sway you, go for the 7 beer taster and make up your own mind, when you do you get the huge stein to settle in with, and the food is very good in there as well, pig ears to start with (like scratchings) and the beans and sausage pan or garlic steak to follow!

they usually have a skate ring setup outside the church which can be fun, walking around and exploring is good as well, with a walk around the old walled town up to abandoned port and across to the new bit of town (for good coffee and shopping) then a big loop back up to the russian church.

wifi is available everywhere for free and there are a few good soviet/war memorabilia shops for vintage things. If you feel like a bit of a throwback to its communist days under soviet reign you can check out the old KGB listening station.

Getting out of town there are places to go shoot guns, and some of the non-tallinn places in surrounding areas are very pretty.

Food and Beer are the two main attractions for me, I went back with the wife last year and we both had a great time so would definitely recommend it, if you are staying in the old town I would say 3 days is ample though.

I have pics at home and will post some up at some point if you are interested.

Finally, if you are on a budget use www.hostelworld.com and if you are feeling something more upmarket go to www.merchantshousehotel.com which rather helpfully is directly opposite the beerhouse and not that expensive

Default Estonia pics...

bit late but better than never...

It was seriously cold when we went at the end of January last year - hence the severe wrap-up!

Forgot to also mention, head to the scotland yard bar/restaurant - great atmosphere, loads of cool deco, good food and sometimes bands play!
