Default Surgery or not ....

Bit of a long story so get your cuppa and a biscuit .... Last March my huge horse (clydesdale) Foxbar pulled my right shoulder out of the socket , went to hospital said just bruised and it'll be fine . 5 weeks later it was still very sore went back to hospital they xrayed it to find I had factured my collar bone and also ripped the bone from the muscles and bust a tendon and ligament damaged, so right facture starting to heel cant do anything I know physio Sent me to physio and he was making me pull little weights, put my arm behine my back by this time I want to be sick and am in agony told me it aint that bad!!!! Sacked him went private after 10 months still not getting better now Ive got an appointment to see the surgeon on 29th March about the high possibility of another operation and to be honest I put up with the pain I still have and would like it fixed but during the last 15 years I've had 13 operations and have died on the table the last 3 major ops so im now scared if truth be known and they cant do it with a local either any advice or am I just being a bit of a wimp.

Sorry to be blunt but unfortunately you will need to have the op or as you get older you will be crippled with arthritis also at the moment its your shoulder muscles tha are holding everything together but as you age you will lose muscle tone and density and will gradually lose the use of that arm, .....

Take it from an old rugby player and m/bike rider.........get it fixed properly now...

I'm no medic but echo entirely the remarks above; nothing involving tissue being parted from bone ever heals itself - any sense that it is improving over time is based on desensitisation rather than real healing. We all kid ourselves things are mending but if there is any movement limitation or pain when there shouldn't be that tells the real story.

Get it done properly because you will come to wish you had. This is said from personal experience.

I know how you feel Ive had cancer of the womb, uterus and ovaries, 2 breast lumps removed, but in remission for 3 years clear fingers crossed this July ive had part of my knee, chunk from my back, tonsils, pin in the side of my face as had a broken cheek not to mention mini ops to sort my right hand out , my gall bladder out and the thought of another operation is just a piss take for me Ive mroe parts missing that whole at the moment so hence the apprehension guys but I'll wait and see what he says fingers crossed it'll be keyhole surgery and not open surger. Thanks for your input guys it is appreciated.

To be quite honest with you, i need to ask....
Have you actually had a proper and FULL assessment?
i mean including a neurologist?
It sounds like you also have a neural dysfunction thrown in to boot! That would explain why your pain is as bad as it is.
Ask your surgeon to perform a Brachial Plexus Integrity Test.... Make sure your teeth are in firmly though!!!
Do you get neck pain or unexplained forearm discomfort / heat / tingling?
Furthermore, the "arm behind your back" exercise is to manage a tear of the rotator cuffs, which, to be blunt, will be the hardest to do if your nerves aren't how they should be.
When you say you tore the bones from muscles and tendons etc, has that been rectified?
And what, exactly are they intending to do in this next operation.
I agree with those above, you DO need surgical intervention, but i also stand by my thoughts that you need THE CORRECT intervention.
If you are being seen by an Orthopaedic Surgeon, then forget it.
You need a Shoulder SPECIALIST.
My advice to you would be to INSIST that you have the necessary assessments to determine WHO works on you...
Let me give you an analogy we can all relate to.....
You can take a poorly car to a general mechanic, who can do, pretty much, everything needed on a car.
However, when your electrics are messing about, you take it to an autoelectrician... not because your general mechanic can't do it... but because your autoelecky is better at it! But you wouldn't then ask your autoelecky guy to do your tracking while you were there!!! Catch my drift?
You need to have a proper assessment. End of.
And if you have to tell them you want to see Dr. X at Hospital Z, then do so. It is your right to do so, in fact.
PM me if you have to. I'll be happy to discuss this at length or over the phone. Heck... i'll treat you myself if i have to!

Mitch.

Had an accident at work 3 years ago and tore the ligaments off the bone in my right shoulder, went to the hospital and after x rays, ultra sound scans and various pulling and twisting and much sweating and swearing at the intence pain they decided to operate, was on the table for 4 hours !!! all done by keyhole surgery so no big scars, after a week i had to go back to hospital cause the pain was so bad it was almost unbearable , it was diagnosed as fluid in my shoulder joint , it was drained , 2 pain killing injections physio, and told my joint was arthritic anyway, almost 1 year off work, its still not right but i can live with it,real bad time in my life. but it wont cure itself have the surgery done , hope everything goes well for you.

Lunar Wolf is right, see a shoulder specialist. My left shoulder got damaged playing rugby, which eventually started to dislocate. Each time it took less to dislocate it.I ended up seeing a shoulder specialist who was at Wigan. He operated on most of the Wigan RL players and used to work for an American Football team before he came to Wigan. His name is Mr Browne.
I had a shoulder reconstruction 18 years ago.
