If you've followed the procedure to the letter (piston all the way out and back in, not touching the handbrake lever until the pads are fully seated using the footbrake, etc.) then the caliper is toast.

The n/s/r wheel spins freely with the handbrake fully applied???
i had one caliper that just would not work on the handbrake but the foot brake was fine

i disconected the hand brake cables and operated the lever on the caliper by hand and it just didnt work so i presumme it was seized or just goosed

in the end i replaced both rear calipers, flexi hoses with braided ones (just for the sake of it) and the handbrake cables as they had seen better days

i did all the above with the car just on axle stands but it is a complete pain in the neck doing the cables

got it all back together and then found the proportioning valve was knacked
so had to change that as well (so fitted braided hoses at the front as well )

alls good now well for a year or two

That's exactly what they're like if the procedure isn't followed to the letter - it sounds like someone moved the lever (even if just to fit the cable) before the pads were seated with the footbrake.

Hmm, well after looking at this again this evening, the handbrake now operates on the n/s/r 'a tiny bit'. No where near enough to hold the car, but the wheel no longer spins freely like before.

After I bled the brakes & tightened up the bleed nipple, I pressed the brake a few times to get a pedal... I suppose my question now is, did I give it enough?

I got talking to a fellow garage owner & that ended up taking over half an hour, by which time I wanted to get packed up, so I maybe wasn't as hard on the pedal that I probably could have been... I'm guessing this last crucial bit could make all the difference?

On the plus side, the steering rack gaiter was adrift, so I resecured it with crimping on a cut-down CV boot clip, so all is well there... at least some sense of achievement came out of this evenings pottering

Success

I wouldn't want to have been paying me by the hour to sort this, but I got there in the end & it's been a learning experience.

Whilst I was winding in the piston with the bleed nipple open & the caliper held at an angle, I got shit loads of air bled out, so possibly a pocket of air in the caliper body wasn't helping things.

Anyway ready for a retest & I'm grateful for everyones advice & all the rest of it on here

Yup, the old trick of closing the garage door & looking at it again another day works wonders for me
