The biggest wind up's sending the poor bugger into an MOT with a shagged set of back plates..

This is what it says...

Brakes
Brake efficiency and balace is usually checked on a roller brake tester. In certain cases where a roller brake tester may not be used (for example on certain 4-wheel drive vehicles) it may be necessary to check brake efficiency and balance on a road test, with a portable decelerometer.

Test Description

Inside the car

Anti-lock braking system (if fitted) warning lamp is checked for:

function
sequence of operation
Footbrake

sufficient reserve travel on the footbrake
pedal rubber not worn to excess
correct operation of the servo assistance system
Parking brake

This could be hand or foot operated. Checked for reserve travel so that it doesn't reach the stops on application. The mountings will be checked for security and/or corrosion.

Under bonnet checks

master cylinder and servo unit are checked for leaks with the engine on and the brakes applied
servo unit will be checked to ensure it is operating correctly
visible metal or flexible brake pipes will be checked for corrosion, condition, fouling or leaks
Under vehicle checks

flexible brake pipes and any other metal brake pipes visible beneath the car are checked
discs and drums (external only) checked for condition and contamination
brake back plates and caliper securing devices are checked for condition and security
condition of the brake pads will be checked if visible
The assistant operates the handbrake and the condition of the linkages and/or cables is checked.
on some vehicles there will be a brake compensating valve beneath the car which will need to be inspected for fluid leaks
Brake performance check

The performance of the front and rear brakes and handbrake are checked for efficiency and balance using specialised equipment.

Although I'm no expert I think by backplate they mean the plates on the drum assemblies like this and that would be a failure

whereas the splash shield is this at the back of the disc like this which I doubt would be a failure

discs all round on the GT, i'll take some piccys and you can let me know what u think of there condition (visually at least).

well, least i wont have to worry about it failing the emissions test, so thats something.

As the place i'm taking it to is where i took the CQ last time.. I was worried about emissions, but turns out they didn't even bother testing the exhaust. Said it was too old and that so long as there wasn't excessive smoke or blue, it passed! (they didn't even seem to mind that the exhaust stunk of petrol! )

mmmmm..I'm not sure about the emissions not needing doing. I believe all cars must be tested unless they are older than 1975 in which case they are exempted

Taken from Haynes website, vehicles post 1975 are subject to testing. I wouldn't be happy using that MOT station if they are just doing a look see! Although an MOT is not a reliabiliy test, a good one done thoroughly should give a once a year view of how the car is mechanically and structurally.

22 CO emissions (mixture) At the time of writing, for vehicles first used between 1st August 1975 and 31st July 1986 (P to C registration), the CO level must not exceed 4.5% by volume. For vehicles first used between 1st August 1986 and 31st July 1992 (D to J registration), the CO level must not exceed 3.5% by volume. Vehicles first used after 1st August 1992 (K registration) must conform to the manufacturer's specification. The MOT tester has access to a DOT database or emissions handbook, which lists the CO and HC limits for each make and model of vehicle. The CO level is measured with the engine at idle speed, and at "fast idle". The following limits are given as a general guide: At idle speed - CO level no more than 0.5% At "fast idle" (2500 to 3000 rpm) - CO level no more than 0.3% (minimum oil temperature 60șC) If the CO level cannot be reduced far enough to pass the test (and the fuel and ignition systems are otherwise in good condition) then the carburettor is badly worn, or there is some problem in the fuel injection system or catalytic converter (as applicable).

23 HC emissions With the CO within limits, HC emissions for vehicles first used between 1st August 1975 and 31st July 1992 (P to J registration) must not exceed 1200 ppm. Vehicles first used after 1st August 1992 (K registration) must conform to the manufacturer's specification. The MOT tester has access to a DOT database or emissions handbook, which lists the CO and HC limits for each make and model of vehicle. The HC level is measured with the engine at "fast idle". The following is given as a general guide: At "fast idle" (2500 to 3000 rpm) - HC level no more than 200 ppm (minimum oil temperature 60șC)
Excessive HC emissions are caused by incomplete combustion, the causes of which can include oil being burnt, mechanical wear and ignition/fuel system malfunction.
