Get a heart rate monitor, sort your real max heart rate and base all of your aerobic training around it. The improvements in your fitness will be gained much quicker as you are sure to be working at the correct intensity. Then get a bike, use it for transport, not just for exercise and you will be amazed.

Shame about the knee, funnily enough the jigsaw puzzles that are my legs don't allow me to run but cycling is ok.
